P. S. 5: My Childhood Experience In The Classroom
Imagine a classroom environment that is chaotic, full of noisy students engaged in "playtime" for the majority of their day. This is my earliest recollection of my kindergarten experience at Public School 5 in Brooklyn, New York. P.S. 5 is located in the Bedford Stuyvestant section of Brooklyn, which at the time, was a neighborhood comprised mostly of African-American families. Community School District 16, where P.S. 5 has always been considered a low performing district and according to the website Schooldigger.com, currently ranks 684 out New York State's 752 school districts. Wanting more academic opportunities for their children, my parents provided resources for my sister and I to be successful in school, an encyclopedia set, magazines and plenty of books. Kaplan, to be the most influential. Mr. Kaplan commanded order and respect within his classroom. He was stern when necessary, but fair and held high expectations for his students. Having taught my sister two years prior, Mr. Kaplan had already established a line of communication with my parents, making it easy to inform them regularly of my academic progress and areas in need of improvement, usually math. Junior high school was a different story. Leaving the nurturing environment of elementary school, I found myself in a larger school with few students I knew and far more that I did not. Familiarizing myself with new teachers and their teaching styles, traveling from class to class and taking public transportation was quite an adjustment. Feeling overwhelmed, my grades suffered the first marking period of my seventh grade year. Fearful of how I would be perceived by my peers, I rarely sought assistance from my teachers regarding content and that contributed to my receiving my first failing

    It 's the rock bottom of a student 's educational career: The day a student drops out of high school. From there, the world may seem to go down in a spiral. Today, 16% of dropouts are unemployed and 32% live below the poverty line. Dropouts with jobs earn an average of only $12.75 per hour (Messacar 55). Students who do graduate from high school have an unemployment rate of only 7.6% (Bureau of Labor Statistics).     Attending school as a child is a requirement that most children have to follow. The exception to this rule is children that are home schooled—which I had sometimes envied. My parents enrolled me at a Catholic school that taught Kindergarten until 8th grade. The student body wore uniforms consisting of for girls white blouses, red and grey plaid skirts and patent leather shoes. The boys’ uniform was not very different—white blouses, grey pants and bright red pullover sweaters. Each year the class moved to a different classroom and received a new teacher. That teacher taught every subject for that given year. If a student fell behind in a subject, the teacher was also the tutor. If students made fun of other students—bullied—this stigma carried on with the person for the whole eight years.     The date of my observation was April 27th, 2010. It was about 9:30 in the morning when I began my study. I went to Grossmont College’s Child Development Center. The first thing I began looking for was if the child-teacher ratio was correct. The child ratio was 2 teachers to about every 8 children. The ratio was good. As I entered there was one large room that almost looked as if it could be two rooms they way it was set up. One half consisted of a large bookshelf with numerous books on it with a couch in the front of it. The other half of the room was almost like a little kitchen. It had a table with chairs around it with a sink and cabinets behind it. There were “age appropriate” toys as well as books all over the room. The areas were both clean and seemed to have no safety hazards. I then walked outside to find almost like a little wonderland for kids. It was so amazing. There was tons of stuff for children to explore and to expand their imaginations. There was a dirt path that went around the children’s whole play area, which was occupied by children riding their tricycles. Then to the right side of the play area there was a huge jungle gym and some play kitchen sets. I observed about 2 teachers that were outside and again 8 children. The teachers outside seemed very respectful towards the children. It was very equal from what I observed. The teachers were very interactive with the children and very helpful when needed. My first impression of “cultural diversity,” I would say that based on just children outside; there are a good mix of Caucasian, Mexican, African-American, and Asians. There seemed to be an equal amount of girls versus boys. The center was kind of hectic but was handled very well by all staff. After observing my surroundings for a minute or two one little girl caught my eye. She reminded me a lot of my two year old just based of her looks and her personality.
