Unequal Society
The phrase ‘unequal society’ is the overall concept in which an individual or a group makes preconceived judgements of an individual or a group before they have communicated effectively.
There are many factors that affect an unequal society such as social exclusion meaning an individual or a group of people may not communicate to another individual as they do not share the same opinions. An example of this maybe a group of friends may believe that Muslims are terrorists however the individual may not agree with this and the individual will be socially excluded.
Prejudice is when an individual has a preconceived thought about the other individual before effective communication has taken place, however if an individual is someone who is not prejudice then this becomes a problem as they may be socially excluded as they don’t have the same views as their friends, an example could be that males are seen as the ’backbone’ of the family purely because of the gender and the individual may not believe this.
Discrimination is when someone is discriminated against because of the age, race, sexuality, characteristics and background such as a company may not hire a woman as they may think that women are not capable of the same jobs as men. Another good example of discrimination would be when a teenager is seen as a troublemaker purely because of their age.
Furthermore, labelling is a major factor that contributes to an unequal society. Labelling is similar to discrimination as an individual maybe judged on an action that is not necessarily done by them, but an action that a member from the group or religion may have done in the past. Labelling can also be described as a preconceived phrase which is related to the person because of their background, such as an American maybe thought of as lazy. A second example could be that a single mother maybe thought of as lazy and on benefits.
Stereotyping is similar to labelling as it still requires an individual having specific views about another individual which is often pressurised by their friends or the social group. An example of this could be when a man and women work the same hours and have the same job the male gets a higher salary than the female.
In conclusion there are many points that cause an unequal society these include stereotyping, labelling, discrimination, marginalising, social exclusion and prejudice without these our society will not be unequal.
