A port expander is a hardware device designed to allow a user to utilize more than one device on a single port at one time. There are two basic forms of port expanders: internal and external. An internal expander has a connection inside the computer and the only part that is visible to the user is the expansion plate containing multiple ports. An external device plugs into the existing port and then has multiple places to connect. Expanders are made for nearly every type of port, but the most common household versions are for universal serial bus(USB) and Ethernet ports.(What Is a Port Expander?, 2013)…
HISTORY: This 87 year old Caucasian male patient, has been diagnosed as having emphysema and congestive heart failure. He is referred for cardiac evaluation and 2-D echo. In January of this year, he had an exercise test, which the family understands was negative. He has no history of myocardial infraction. His only other cardiac testing has been exercise testing. He has never had a heart cath. He had atrial fibrillation, diagnosed many years ago, and is still followed with Coumadin. He denies chest pain. He has significant dyspnea, uses O2.…
Medical researchers use laboratory-grown human cells to learn the intricacies of how cells work and test theories about the causes and treatment of diseases. The cell lines they need are “immortal”—they can grow indefinitely, be frozen for decades, divided into different batches and shared among scientists. In 1951, a scientist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, created the first immortal human cell line with a tissue sample taken from a young black woman with cervical cancer. Those cells, called HeLa cells, quickly became invaluable to medical research-though their donor remained a mystery for decades. In her new book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, journalist Rebecca Skloot tracks down the story of the source of the amazing HeLa cells, Henrietta Lacks, and documents the cell line's impact on both modern medicine and the Lacks family.…
During the process of this exercise in Garbology, I chose to collect garbage from my neighbor’s private home. I personally do not know them very well, but we are friendly enough that they were willing and happy to provide their trash and recycling as part of the experiment. I chose to separate the items between trash and recycling, and then created subcategories within those headings. The table below is a list of the categories and the items I chose as anthropological examples of their lifestyle, social class, and preoccupations.…
An issue with PET and MRI scans is that the patient has to stay still, and cannot move as this could interfere with the investigation and not give accurate results. So this will not be the easiest procedure for people who are claustrophobic with the MRI scan and the space where the person can go between the scanners is not the biggest, so there will be no room to move and is not very beneficial for the obese. There are scanners which are made to be bigger and have…
The tests could help patients with heart diseases and could detect a potential heart attack and prevent it from happening.…
Blood tests for congestive heart failure checks for levels of a hormone called B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). Large amounts of BNP could indicate CHF. Coronary catheterization, or angiogram, is used to identify the strength of ones left ventricle and the health of the heart valves using a dye that is visible under x-ray. An echocardiogram can be used to produce a video image of your heart 's size, structure and function. It can help doctors determine the percentage of blood being pumped out of the left ventricle. “Right heart catheterization is a test in which a catheter is inserted through the neck or groin and is guided into the heart to measure pressures within the chambers” ("CHF Testing," 2011, p. 2). These various tests, or combinations of tests, helps guide health care teams in the proper treatment of CHF.…
Death is inevitable, and the thought of death and the aftermath terrifies most people. Knowing one will die in comfort eases this terror. No one can say animals do not have the same thoughts as humans. Many members in the Hallsville community regard their pets as family members and feel directly affected by the loss of their pet. This negatively effects the mental state of pet owners. The Hallsville Vet provides medication for pets that need to be put down. The medication allows the pet to die in comfort, feeling no pain, and helps the mind of the owner losing their pet. The Hallsville Veterinary Clinic portrays a comforting atmosphere for sick or injured animals through the smells, sights, and sounds found in the building.…
Today class we will talk about how to take care of a pet. There are many types of animals that you can have for a pet. I choose to explain the steps in taking care of a puppy. In my opinion, puppies are so cute and playful. One thing about puppies is that they turn into dogs. When caring for a puppy you have to be very careful and gentle. Puppies are very fragile and have to be handled with care. I will explain the things that you must do in caring for a puppy.…
The whole point of having proper insurance is to minimize the risk of bad things happening to us. In some cases, having insurance is very good. There are some insurances that almost all of us should have. These are things like car insurance, health insurance, term life insurance and long term disability insurance. They will prevent you from being had financially in the event that san emergency of multiple sorts happens. It makes sense to insure yourself for things that are likely to happen, but it makes no sense to insure against things which will never happen, otherwise you'd see a flurry of alien abduction insurance policies being created. Here are some times of insurance that you do not need and should avoid. Cancer Insurance. This policy…
Did you know that there are over 2.4 million healthy dogs and cats in shelters? Did you also know that one every thirteen seconds are euthanized ("Pet Overpopulation: The Humane Society of the United States")? These animals don’t ask to be brought into this world to be put in a small, cold enclosed cage. I personally wouldn’t want to be born into the world to be given up on, would you? Too many people don’t understand or even care to understand this sad statistic. In fact, humanity is so selfish in that aspect it makes me truly sick. Why do we have to have the cutest puppies or kittens? What’s wrong with an older dog, you don’t have to train them half the time. They need love too. My goal gave me the motivation to reach out to my local shelter that influenced me to explore programs in the future to help all dogs and cats.…
Pet overpopulation is an ongoing crisis and is a serious issue in every community. Each year thousands of animals must be euthanized and put to sleep because decent homes are not found for them. Abandoned dogs and cats are free to roam the streets where they must struggle to survive on their own. The number is approximately; 8 million unwanted animals taken into shelters all across the country. Sadly, more than half of them eventually become euthanized. Shelter euthanasia is the number one cause of death of cats and dogs in the states. (PAWS Chicago). Further actions and more laws should be enforced in order to fix the overpopulation of domestic animals. The causes of overpopulation are due to overbreeding, choosing not to adopt, people disposing of their pets, and irresponsible pet owners who choose not to neuter.…
For my assignment, I chose to do a practical joke on my girlfriend. She is an apprentice at a funeral home in Jeffersonville, IN. The funeral home she works for also has a pet crematory. With the pet crematory, they have a service where they will come pick up your animal either from your house or the vet and cremate it for you. All you have to do is come pick up the ashes. She mostly just works at the actual funeral home, but some weekends she is on call for the pet crematory and has to go pick up pets and communicate with families.…
The PiB radiotracer was synthesized at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory using a previously published protocol (Mathis et al., 2003). PiB-PET imaging was conducted using a Siemens ECAT HR scanner in 3-D acquisition mode, which can provide direct insight into cerebral amyloidosis. Cerebral Aβ was measured using the PiB index that averages PiB signal in brain regions with amyloidosis (Marchant et al., 2014). Distribution volume ratio values were extracted from regions of interest vulnerable to Aβ deposition. PiB index can be used as a marker in diagnosing and monitoring disease progression in Alzheimer Disease (Lockhart et al.,…
“Pet Milk” by Stuart Dybek presents many interesting points about the human experience, between paying intense attention to detail, appealing to the audience’s emotions, and exploring the idea of “just living in the moment.”…
