"My mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.' Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso." Pablo Picasso
“The world today doesn’t make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?” Pablo Picasso
“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not. ”Pablo Picasso
“It is the man who challenges and denies who stirs other men to think for themselves. That is the chief value of the cubist painting-they compel us to think for ourselves, to take careful inventory of our stereotyped notions…” Jerome Eddy , Art Critic http://www.csiss.org/classics/content/40 http://www.artyfactory.com/art_appreciation/art_movements/cubism.htm www.robinurton.com/history/cubism.htm www.slideshare.net …show more content…
The era of cubism was from 1907-1920’s
With the three basics of cone, sphere, and cube Picasso had created a radical invention.
This style was far different from any other form of art before. These, “cubists” strayed from the typical guidelines followed by painters everywhere
Those rules included using paint to show color and texture, and other illusions that came from scientific laws of perspective.
The cubists broke away from these rigid instructions by fragmenting the art into different planes, and then interlacing them back together in a pattern.
He often put them back together around the nose, which typically resulted in a much larger figure. That’s done on purpose in order to draw attention to them and their differentially.
Controversy was had over this new alternative way in painting that led to thoughts throughout all artistic expression, including poetry, dance, theater, and sculpture.
The paintings were so distorted that for centuries cartographers tried to figure out how to display maps of the globe on a flat surface as a two dimensional figure
Cubists together helped people to discover how to literally change the point of view from a first
glance.
Later Picasso and Braque were creating more collages with oil cloths. This was highly unusual considering that they were using such everyday materials for fine art pieces.
These two men were the first to question the elitism in the world and to start to something more abstract such as the abstract expressionism thirty years later.
People started to worry as these very diverse paintings got to the point that they were incomprehensible beyond the artist. It takes a keen eye to pick out each item portrayed in the art pieces.
Cubism affected photography and buildings heavily, as well as cinematography .
