Pacific Green Turtle Characteristics
Pacific Green Turtle
In my paper I will write about characteristics of the Pacific Green Turtle, along with where they are located, lifecycle, what they eat and predators of the species.
The Pacific Green Turtle gets the name from their “Subdermal”. Have flippers that provide them with the ability to move quickly under the ocean water. Shell of the turtle is called the “Carapace”, which happens to be the largest part of the animal. The shell isn't always green, infact it can be a variety blend of colors. Including brown, dark olive, gray, and or black. Interesting enough it's smooth and is in the shape of a heart. The bottom part of the shell is called the “Plastron”, somewhat of a yellow white color. Having the ability to grow four to five

Most pet turtles, red eared sliders included, are mainly herbivorous in the wild and can survive on vegetables such as carrots, lettuce or cabbage or fruits such as berries. Some owners also introduce earthworms or live insects such as crickets, beetles or spiders. You can also buy commercial turtle food to ensure that your turtle is getting all of the nutrients it needs. Diet and frequency of feeding is also, in part, a function of your turtle's age. One thing you will notice is that the red eared slider's diet tends to change as they mature. Younger turtles are usually omnivores, eating a wide range of vegetation and insects. As they mature, they tend to be more herbivorous, sticking to fruits and vegetables.…

The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is a beautiful creature that many marine biologists in today’s world love to study. It is the world’s largest hard shelled turtle, belonging to family Cheloniidae. Its scientific name is Caretta Caretta. The Loggerhead can be found all around the world in many different habitats. Although they are the most abundant marine turtle in the U.S., they have been on the threatened species list since 1978. This is due to many factors, a couple being: pollution and trawling.(National Geographic)…

In 1947 it was reported that over 40,000 Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles were nesting along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico and today only 200 Kemp Ridley’s remain on those grounds, making these sea turtles one of the most endangered animals in the United States. When I was younger I remember visiting South Padre Island and seeing holes a long the shore line with little eggs inside them, I also remember this man who drove up and down the beach looking for those eggs in a golf cart. I asked my mom “Why is this man taking away these eggs, won’t the momma be sad?” my mom then told me that these were in fact the eggs of the Kemp’s Ridley. I had no idea how that was relevant, I was six…

This has inspired genetic researchers to begin examining the turtle genome for longevity genes.[7][edit] Systematics and evolutionThe first proto-turtles are believed to have existed in the early Triassic Period of the Mesozoic era, about 220 million years ago, and their shell, which has remained a remarkably stable body plan, is thought to have evolved from bony extensions of their backbones and broad ribs that expanded and grew together to form a complete shell that offered protection at every stage of its evolution, even when the bony component of the shell was not complete. This is supported by fossils of the freshwater Odontochelys semitestacea or "half-shelled turtle with teeth", from the late Triassic, which have been found near Guangling in south-west China. Odontochelys displays a complete bony plastron and an incomplete carapace, similar to an early stage of turtle embryonic development.[8] Prior to this discovery, the earliest-known fossil turtles were terrestrial and had a complete shell, offering no clue to the evolution of this remarkable anatomical feature. By the late Jurassic, turtles had…

There are many endangered species in the world among these species is the Eretmochelys imbricata, commonly known as the Hawksbill Sea Turtle. The Hawksbill Sea Turtle has a lifespan of about 30 to 50 years. The turtle is an omnivore and consumes sea grasses, sea urchins, barnacles, small animals, and their favorite food, sponges (National Wildlife Federation). Regardless of their lifespan and diet, these turtles are dying quicker than normal because of the human race. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Hawksbill Sea Turtle is classified as critically endangered (Plos One). This means that the turtle has become especially susceptible to extinction worldwide. The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is found in the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Nevertheless, this sea turtle stays away from deep waters and would rather stay near the coastlines where sponges and nesting sites are close by (National Geographic). This way they are able to…

Keystone species are species of animals that other species and the entire ecosystem depend on. Sea otters and elephants both play major roles in their ecosystems, as they are both keystone species. Without these two species, their ecosystems would have drastic changes in the environment in which many organisms and species would not be able to survive. If the sea otters and elephants were to leave the ecosystem it would cause a domino effect. The domino effect would make other species disappear and become extinct. After species leave, there is room for new species to move in and overtake the native species which would then change the ecosystem entirely to a new one. Sea otters and elephants are prime examples of keystone species, as without them a rapid domino effect would happen…

    Sea Turtles

If I was writing a report on an endangered species I would choose the sea turtle. The reason I would choose the sea turtle is because in our source “Turtles in Trouble” it gave us the story of a turtle named Adelita. This turtle traveled 6,000 miles alone to Japan. To me that is pretty amazing that a turtle can remember where she laid her eggs especially since it is very far away. Another reason I choose this article is because was pretty reliable. This article was reliable because scientist Jay Nichols, studied her and put a transmitter on her back to track her movements so that he could find out what was happening to this endangered species. This article was not very current because they first found Adelita in Baja California, Mexico in 1986. These are just some reasons why I choose this article.…
