Padparadscha Case Study
The word padparadscha is derived from a Sanskrit term ‘padma raga’ which means (Padma= Lotus, Range= Color) the color of lotus flower. The padparadscha is a gemstone variety of mineral corundum. It was first mined in Sri Lanka. This type of gemstones belongs to the family of sapphires. It is the rarest of all the colors of sapphires. It is believed that this gemstone is the most durable. Padparadscha is cut in a number of shapes such as circle, cushion and oval. The colour tone is available from pink to orange. This stone is not at all artificially treated and therefore, it is the rarest of the rare and the natural Padparadscha have higher prices than that of the best Sapphire

This interview was held on January 25, 2018.
The participants were asked a series of questions concerning the definition of padparadscha, starting with a single sentence that would sum up their definition of padparadscha.

Their responses were as follows:
• A sapphire with two colored hues, pink & orange.
Color of the sunset is the perfect color of the padparadscha with a mixture of the lotus color. A mix of pink & orange.
• A mix of pure orange and pink hues, creating a vivid and pure uniform color.
• A deep pink sapphire with generous orange hue.
• A true balance of pink & orange or orange & pink.
• Valuable, Orangish pink stone.
From these responses it is clear that padparadscha is considered by these dealers to be a mixture of pink and orange.

Following this, respondents were questioned regarding the numbers of gems they typically see in a year, the color terms they associate with padparadscha, whether or not color zoning, origin or treatment should affect the padparadscha definition, and if yes, whether those features should also affect the definitions of ruby and blue sapphire. The results from those questions are found in Figures
