Paethon And Epaphus Similarities
Phaethon and Epaphus are very similar to human children. Most human children are very competitive and like to brag to each other. In this situation, Phaethon and Epaphus are trying to convince each other that each of their fathers is better than the other. Since Phaethon has so much pride and doesn’t want to lose, he decides to lie in order to not lose respect. This is the source of the conflict in the story. This kind of action is common among humans because humans want others to think of them as better than what they are. By lying to protect your pride, people often go into deeper problems. The story suggests to watch your pride, know your place, and not make yourself bigger than how you really are to avoid conflicts with people. Boasting

Ballinger states in the article “Brad Blanton: Honestly Tell the Truth,” that lying can humiliate your friend. For example, your friend decides to take you dress shopping for her sweet sixteen dress. She tries on many dresses and finds a dress she thinks is the one. Sitting there you know the dress looks odd on her but don’t have the guts to say the truth. You sit there and smile and say, “It looks amazing on you.”…

People are willing to do anything to make themselves look good. For instance in the play Abigail lies about several things to save herself. One of the things she lies about is dancing in the forest by saying, “We Danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all.” Initially Abigail seems like a truthful individual, but as time goes by; her true self and personality are revealed. She doesn’t care…

I think it is good that you shouldn't say anything at all instead of lying, but in the book, this is said to be the cruelest type of lies. Stereotypes create lies because a group of people's actions caused bad things to happen. Some lies are straightforward, and purpose is to avoid the truth all together. It's seems that the author believes lying is important in order to not hurt peoples feelings and to be successful and happy. Being dishonest is a cover-up for pain, hurt, guilt, or ignorance. I don't agree with author in something's that she says. It is true that lying may cover up pain, but the truth will always solve the problem.…

The debate over the acceptability of lying is a complicated one. Some feel that it is morally wrong and only ever worsens a situation. Others feel that it is acceptable in cases where feelings could be hurt, or if a person’s self-esteem may be lowered. However, there are instances in which lying happens simply to avoid the consequences of a person’s actions, and most would agree that it is morally wrong. Instead of going back and forth between “lying is wrong” and “lying is okay sometimes,” a better use of our time would be learning to improve our honesty with ourselves and with the people around…

First off let me start of by saying that we lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we leave out things, we avoid confrontation, we try to be inconsideration of other people feelings, we conveniently forget some aspects of the truth and even keep secrets. Like most people, I find myself in situations of small falsehoods and still think of my self of an honest person. Sure I lie, but it’s not really bothering anyone or anything.…

It is curious to know that every day without thinking everyone tells lies “The Ways we lie” by Stephanie Ericcson is a realistic text that demonstrates what a lie is, why lies are told, how lies are justified, and consequences. According to this essay “We lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare people's feelings, we conveniently forget, we keep secrets, we justify lying to the big-guy institutions.” (Page 408 of The Bedford Reader). Ericsson analyze the different ways we use lies to help and hurt our self in our everyday lives, and how this effects American culture. The purpose of this essay is not to make people feel bad about themselves or to censure anybody, but to make people think before they lie.…

Lying can be used as a way to respond to conflict. I am sure that at least once in your life you have lied about something to protect yourself or someone else. In the story “The Diary of Anne Frank” Anne is a Jewish girl hiding with her family from the Nazis. While in the annex, they have friends who keep their secret by lying about their location so they don’t get caught. (Frank 122-124) Another example would be the book “The Boy In The Striped Pajamas”. The young boy Bruno thinks the concentration camps near his new house are farms, his mother and father refuse to tell him what it actually is. Bruno lies to…

Most of the time it is easier to tell a lie than it is to tell the truth and there is no way that we will ever completely eliminate lying from our society, because it does make our lives so much easier. Sometimes though lying can come with consequences, and it can backfire when someone discovers that you lied. Lying can cause a situation to become worse than it would have been if the truth had been told. Take James Frey for an example. He wrote an autobiography called A Million Little Pieces and the book was featured on Oprah and put on her book club list. After a while it was discovered that parts of his autobiography were not real and he was humiliated on a national level. If he had told the truth then his book could have still been published, but as a fictional story, and he could have still been a successful author and had a bestselling book. You should always be careful with the lies you tell and who you tell them to because there’s always a chance that someone will find out and then you would be in trouble.…

Despite the fact that lying is harmful in various ways, at some point in each of our lives we have lied, some may be more than other but we all tell a little lie once in a while. In the article ''Lying'' Tim Mazur talks about the possible consequences that one can for lying and also mention various reason what may cause some to lie. Tim Mazur believes people lie to maintain relationships, please others, avoid awardness and punishment. From my perspective I believe there are circumstances where lying can be acceptable under the following circumstances: to maintain peace, in order to gain something beneficial that can become life-changing , to protect the wealth of others, and to please others.(implicate how lying can affect others and possible consequences one can face in the begging)…

Growing up your taught to be yourself. I near understand that message growing, I was quite the story teller. I told stories to make myself look better to people whom I assumed would be "friends" … I was a pretentious child I lied about the most unnecessary things. I recall telling this elaborate story about me going to this wild party with my grown friends, living the good life, dancing with boys and basically have a ball to the girls at my ballet class. Everything that was mentioned in the story was a lie my oldest friend was 13 at the time and she had the same curfew as me. I wasn't interested with boys like my other female peers and the worst part about this event was the audience …. I told this lie to a group of 8 years and at the time I was 11. The fact that I was the oldest person in the room and I lied to a group of 8 years old to make myself look better was sad. I could had honestly told them the truth that I actually stayed home that night and played The Sims with my older sister would had still fascinated them and they would had still thought my story was pretty cool and it was actual facts. I remember leaving class that day being filled with glee because I was the "IT" girl of the class I was the "popular girl" and I had everyone talking. I remember entering middle school thinking that if I used same strategy to impress the girls about ballet class, I could impress the girls that I would have spend the next three years with in middle school. That plan was a fail. When the school week would start again, the girls would gather around and brag about what they did on the weekends. Everyone had a story that made my weekend story sob and beg for mercy to the "Social Life Police". When it was my turn to talk about what I did that weekend, I did what any desperate youth whom was dying to be with the cool girls would do …. lie … and lie pretty damn good. But, eventually all my stories started sounding the same and they realized my life wasn't that glamorous…
