Pahrump – An Introduction
The peaceful Pahrump Valley of Southern Nevada is located approximately 45 miles West of Las Vegas and 60 miles East of Death Valley. The word Pahrump is a Paiute Indian expression interpreted to mean
"water rock" or "place where big waters flow".
Pahrump offers a rural, country-like atmosphere with clean fresh air, plenty of good water and a temperate desert climate second to none. The surrounding majestic mountain ranges and breathtaking sunsets are truly awesome.
People are friendly, property taxes are low and there are no personal or corporate taxes. With a population of about 36,000 there is no traffic to fight and very little crime.
Pahrump was originally inhabited by the Shoshone. It was slowly inhabited by American settlers in the late 19th century. They reportedly chose the name for Pahrump after the original indigenous name PahRimpi, or "Water Rock," so named because of the abundant artesian wells in the valley. Because of the artesian wells, the new inhabitants of Pahrump Valley began a number of large ranch-style holdings, mostly over 1000 acres (4 km²) in size. On these ranches, alfalfa and cotton were grown, and livestock were raised.

The Industrial Revolution of the late 1800s brought economic and social change to the cities as well as the frontier. During this transformation, entrepreneurs and laborers could not rise up as individuals against big businesses and were offered little chance for unions so they were compelled to assimilate themselves into America’s largely capitalist industries. Likewise, farmers, miners, and long drive cowboys were affected and influenced by larger, more profitable “corporations” including large-scale cash crop farms, ore-breaking machines, and the railroad. Thus, the mining, ranching, and farming frontiers responded to the industrial revolution in the same way as entrepreneurs and laborers, as each group was ultimately intercepted and changed by larger businesses and elite corporations.…
