Alvar Aalto experimented with materials, especially wood, in his early life. He designed several types of furniture and lamps for the Paimio sanatorium (1929-33). The best known piece of his work is the Paimio chair.
The chair was designed for tuberculosis patients to sit in for long hours daily. The angle of the back of the chair is the perfect angle for patients to breathe most easily. Instead of using traditional metal tubes, Aalto wanted something warmer and more benevolent for the furniture.
The frame is laminated birch bent into a congested curve. The seat is molded from one piece of birch plywood. The silhouette of the chair was Aalto’s brainstorm of making a wooden chair “soft.” The size is 62.5x61x88 and the seat height is 34 cm.
