    Education in Pakistan

    • 1694 Words
    • 7 Pages

Education is a universal, fundamental human right, recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and reaffirmed in international human rights conventions. In this era of technology, advancement and globalization, education is the key to success and peace. Education is considered as the cheapest defense of a nation. But the worst condition of education in Pakistan reflects the fact that it is unable to defend its own sector. Though 62 years have passed and 23 policies and action plans have been introduced yet the educational sector is waiting for an effective educational reforms. With respect to Human Development Index, Pakistan has been placed by UNDP at 136th position, lower than some of its regional neighbors like Sri Lanka, Maldives, India and Myanmar mainly due to its low literacy rate and low primary level enrolment. In different reports the Ministry of Education claimed that literacy in Pakistan is over 50%, but open sources disagree with it and they say that it is merely 35%. Ratio of budget indicates the level of importance given by a nation to the education. Historically, Pakistan has been spending less on education, as compared to other countries in the region. Pakistan spends less than 2% of its GDP on education which is less than Iran, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives the neighboring countries of Pakistan, the world standard stands at 5% of the GDP. With such non serious attitude towards Education, there remains a dearth of well educated and skillful individuals. Among the SAARC Nations, Pakistan is at the sixth and at the 159th position among the 174 World countries.…

Pakistan Railways, lifeline of the country, is a national state-run transport service. It is under the administration of federal government and its head quarter is in Lahore. It is an important source of transportation throughout Pakistan. It carries millions of passengers throughout the country. It used to carry huge freight in Pakistan. This cheap and safe mode for passengers is now facing a number of issues. A number of services of Pakistan Railways have been cancelled, suspended or terminated and many more will be suspended in near future because of mismanagement and shortage of locomotives, fuel and money. The chapter of all major services, from Lahore to Karachi, has been closed. It is pertinent to mention that all AC serviceshave been stopped. The incompetent administration has failed to attain locomotives from any quarter of the world. Passengers are suffering due to mismanagement of administration. Pakistan Railways decision to suspend goods train service due to severe shortage of locomotives and fuel is another blow to this organization. It is now basically financially bankrupt organization. In other words it is on the verge of financial collapse.…

The State of Jammu and Kashmir is situated between Pakistan and India. Among the key reasons for tension between Pakistan and India is the key problem of Kashmir. Whereas Pakistan has repeatedly termed this the "core issue" in its relationship with India, India has maintained that this matter was settled with Kashmir's accession to India in October 1947. As far as India has been concerned, therefore, the only issue for discussion has been what India regards as Pakistan's continuing illegal occupation of part of Jammu and Kashmir, an occupation that began in 1947–48, during the war between the two. About 63 per cent of the territory is under Indian occupation; while the rest, 37 per cent, is with Pakistan, called "Azad" meaning independent Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Total population of Kashmir is about 13 million. Population of Indian occupied Kashmir is about 7.7 million and remaining 6 million is with Pakistan. Kashmir dispute is the oldest unresolved conflict between Pakistan and India. Over which both countries have fought 3 wars. Pakistan considers Kashmir as the fundamental political dispute with India, where as India does not consider Kashmir as a dispute, in fact it considers it as its internal affair. The world has accepted Kashmir as a disputed territory and as an international conflict that needs to be resolved.…

    Language Policy in India

    • 3845 Words
    • 16 Pages

Exploring language policy in India is both a complex and interesting task. Contrary to other empires that went through state consolidation, it is clear that India is quite the linguistic mosaic (Laitin, 415). Not only is there no single language for official exchange, but citizens of India have developed complex language repertoires in order to interact with servants, family, merchants, colleagues and officials. Language needs are so onerous that many parents with sufficient resources seek to equip their children with different repertoires in order to hedge their linguist bets. This situation has led sensitive observers of India to forecast dangerous decades of language conflict” (Laitin, 415). Although in the past there has been significant controversy surrounding language policy in India (and even a history of violence) the present system that exists is quite stable. The current policy in India can be described as a 3+/- 1 language outcome (Laitin, 415). The explanation that this paper seeks to offer is to make clear why, when Indian Congress attempted to create a single domestic language for the purpose of official communication did they receive greater opposition than rulers who consolidated earlier on? More importantly, common explanations on this matter at the current time seem to be inadequate and are often based on “special attributes of Indian culture and history” (Laitin, 415). In the place of the standard explanations it is clear that a game theoretic analysis of political strategy is better suited to understand why India faced greater opposition to a single language than other states. A game theoretic analysis not only gives a collective understanding of the Indian language policy in place, it helps to specify the outcome of the policy through the factor of historical state…

Literature in Lalla's era was still carried forwarded from generation to generation to teachers and pupils verbally. The recites carefully conveyed the exact meaning of the messages word for word as they had received them, even if they do not understand them. Because of such a tradition we come across words which are purely traditional and of whom the given meanings are lost. This was the reason why the collections of manuscripts put together by scholars were incomplete and there prevailed disagreement over the contents and text of the prepared manuscripts. Spellings are in inconsequent style of Kashmiri manuscripts and a good number of mistakes are also found in few of them. Metrical accentuations of most of the verses were written by putting the mark “II”. No attempt was made in the Kashmiri spellings to indicate the existence of matra-vowels or the consequent epenthetic changes of vowels caused by…

The amalgamation and transformation of languages due to globalization and world wide electronic connectivity is happening at a much faster pace than the pre-internet era. In India - with its burgeoning ambition, changing demographics, widening market, nuclearisation of families and massive shift in population from the rural and semi-rural to the urban - the linguistic map is rapidly changing. The westernisation and growing tendency to depart from the tradition has made its own negative impact on us. Young, upwardly mobile couples are taking recourse to English or Hindi as a means of communication between themselves and their children; the prime casualty everywhere is the mother-tongue.…
