Pakistan Paper Products Ltd came into existence in 1951. At that time our newly founded country had to import all its paper products which was resulting in the drain of valuable foreign Exchange. Realizing the need of times, Mr. Hashim B. Sayeed armed with machinery and technical know how from Germany decided to set up a paper converting unit in Pakistan. In 1962 Pakistan Paper Products became a Private Limited company and then in 1964 it became a Public limited company and was quoted on the Karachi Stock Exchange and till today it is one of the oldest listed companies at the KSE. From the very start the company has strived to modernize, expand, and diversify to meet the challenges of the changing times and is today one of the largest and most modern paper converting company in the country.
INTRODUCTION
Paper is a major product of the forestry industry, and is used widely in our society. Paper products are used not only in their obvious applications in the publishing industry and for writing on, but also in a variety of specialty papers, cardboards, brown papers etc. In addition, various chemicals are produced as a byproduct of the pulp and paper industry (see articles). Paper is made by pulping wood, bleaching this pulp and then spreading it out into sheets to make it into paper. At various stages of the process, chemicals are used to give the paper particular properties, such as the bleaching chemicals that make paper white (and which also enable it to subsequently be coloured). The pulping process that is used in New Zealand is known as "kraft pulping" which relies on a combination of heat, chemicals and mechanical pulping to convert the wood into a smooth, soft pulp suitable for use in paper making.
Kraft pulping is the main pulping process (together with mechanical pulping) used today, and is the only one discussed below. The kraft process has several advantages:
