Before I started to do this project I wanted to know the history and background of the tamale. I found that the tamale was recorded as early as 5000 BC, possibly 7000 BC in Pre-Columbian history. Initially, women were taken along in battle as army cooks to make the masa for the tortillas and the meats, stews, drinks, etc. As the warring tribes of the Aztec, Mayan, and Inca cultures grew, the demand of readying the nixtamal (corn) itself became very overwhelming process. A need arose to have a more portable sustaining source of food.…

Jewelers put diamonds and sapphires on velvet in order to display the jewels and make them look more impressive. In Tortilla Flat, John Steinbeck is the jeweler and his characters are the diamonds. Steinbeck’s embellished tone toward his characters is a pretense to show off his characters and present them as more admirable and chivalric than their outward actions would honestly allow. His admiring tone towards his characters in Tortilla Flat contributes to the emphasis of “simple things” presented throughout the novel.…

Doughnuts are one of my favorite foods. I don’t eat them regularly, maybe once a month so they are an occasional treat for me. Darryl Townson, owner of “Dat Doughnut” shop in Illinois makes his living from the fried sugary goodies. Recently, lawmakers have been pushing for a ban on artificial trans fats. Such a ban would mean that people like Townson would have to alter the way he makes his doughnuts. Here in Washington, a similar bill has already been passed in King County. I chose to do my paper on the banning of trans fats because I think it is an important issue for the health and well being of the overall population. I believe there are other alternatives for preparing foods that do not involve the use of the unhealthy…

Throughout the world, there are thousands of foods to choose from. Everyone has a certain dish and a certain way to prepare it and enjoy. Growing up I had the opportunity to pick one type of food in which we wanted to have at dinner. I would choose the side for dinner on Sunday’s; I would always choose Baked Macaroni and Cheese. There are several ways to prepare my dish, but I enjoy it one special way. First you would start out preheating your oven to three-hundred and fifty degrees. Secondly, boil a pot of water then add twelve ounces of elbow macaroni and cook until the noodles are soft. While the macaroni is cooking, you add twenty-four ounces of sour cream, one pound of shredded Cheddar cheese, and one egg to a bowl and mix together. After you have cooked the delicious macaroni, you strain the water and add the macaroni to the bowl with the sour cream, cheese, and egg. After adding all of those ingredients, mix all of the ingredients together until all of the noodles are coated and everything is mixed together thoroughly. Let that sit a minute, get a thirteen by nine inch pan and coat it with Crisco spray. Add your macaroni mixture to it and flatten to even it out. If desired, add shredded cheese and sprinkle paprika on the top. Ensure your oven is preheated to three-hundred and fifty degrees and bake for thirty minutes. Once complete the cheese should be bubbling, and the edges should be brown. The Baked Macaroni is done to perfection, and your mouth will water just looking at. Macaroni and cheese together is a wonderful dish, but baking it just adds a whole other level to it. As everyone has their favorite foods, mine has always been prepared this special way. I picked this every time I had the chance, and will be using this special recipe with my own family. Hopefully it will be someone else’s favorite food, as it is…
