On first look at the painting, we give our attention to the isolated woman in the middle of the work. The woman is the largest feature of the painting and is the focal point of all other elements found in the painting. The woman is portrayed as someone of great importance. robe as well as blue drapery and a red sash of some sort. Above her there is a sort of illumination and she is gazing into the sky, focusing on the bird overhead. The bird seems to be gazing back at the woman. The woman’s hands are open and appear to be welcoming in what is above her. Because this woman is the central and most significant character in the painting, whatever is holding her attention must be important as well. Perspective is used to show the importance of the interaction taking place between the bird overhead and the woman.
As our eyes move from the woman to the other characteristics of the artwork, we notice that the other elements of the painting are all circling around this central figure. Around the woman we can see many winged babies directing their attention to both the woman and towards the bird in the sky where the figure is looking. Furthermore, we notice other, smaller birds that circle around the woman as well. The blue sky and pink clouds found in the artwork also appear to circle around the central figure and guide our eyes back towards the woman and the bird. These shapes found within the painting serve to reiterate the importance of the interaction that is taking place between the woman and the bird overhead.
As we shift our attention to other aspects of the artwork, we notice that nearly everything in the painting contains the colors blue, pink, or white.
The woman is wearing a white robe and is draped in a blue material. The color blue is also found in the sky and in the flowers that one of the children is extending to the woman. Pink is very prominent in the painting. A piece of the figure’s clothing is pink and the clouds are pink. The winged children have a pink hue as well. The color white is significant because the bird above the woman is white. The light in this painting appears to be radiating from the woman, further deeming her importance. The lighting and colors found in the work are used to show that the communication between the bird and the woman is important
In Antonio de Palomino y Velasco’s painting, The Immaculate Conception (Fig 1), the characteristics of the artwork all lead us towards the interaction in the center of the painting. The work utilizes creative elements that include perspective, lighting and colors, and shapes to illustrate the importance of the interaction between the central characters in the foreground of the
painting.
