In Richard Connell’s thrilling short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, an uneasy mood is constructed by Rainsford’s illusive adventure on Ship Trap Island. Many moments in the short story help build up a feeling of uneasy, one being when Winston uses a simile to describe the evil of the atmosphere, saying that the air “ was actually poisonous”, and that he felt a “mental chill, a sort of sudden dread” when the ship neared the island (Connell 1). The author makes the reader feel uneasy by making just the atmosphere itself seem evil and dangerous with the simile comparing the air to something that kills and is to be avoided. Readers also naturally pick up the feeling of dread from Whitney, which significantly helps in building…

Earnings per share (EPS) is defined as net income divided by the number of shares of stock issued to stockholders. Higher EPS values indicate the company is earning more net income per share of stock outstanding. Because EPS is one of the five performance measures on which your company is graded (see p. 2 of the GSR) and because your company has a higher EPS target each year, you should monitor EPS regularly and take actions to boost EPS. One way to boost EPS is to pursue actions that will raise net income (the numerator in the formula for calculating EPS). A second means of boosting EPS is to repurchase shares of stock, which has the effect of reducing the number of shares in the possession of shareholders. Return on equity (ROE) is defined as net income (or net profit) divided by total shareholders’ equity investment in the business. Higher ratios indicate the company is earning more profit per dollar of equity capital provided by shareholders. Because ROE is one of the five performance measures on which your company is graded (see p. 2 of the GSR), and because your company’s target ROE is 15%, you should monitor ROE regularly and take actions to boost ROE. One way to boost ROE is to pursue actions that will raise net profits (the numerator in the formula for calculating ROE). A second means of boosting ROE is to repurchase shares of stock, which has the effect of reducing shareholders’ equity investment in the company (the denominator in the ROE calculation). Operating profit margin is defined as operating profits divided by net revenues (where net revenues represent the dollars received from camera sales, after exchange rate adjustments and any promotional discounts). A higher operating profit margin (shown on p. 6 of the GSR) is a sign of competitive strength and cost competitiveness. The bigger the percentage of operating profit to net…

In “The Most Dangerous Game”, the author uses many methods to develop the characters and how they see the world, themselves, and others around them. First, Rainsford gets stranded on an island after he is talking to a friend on a yacht he was on about how the hunter is dominant and how the animals hunted do not feel anything which could be foreshadowing a change in the story and what it’s based on. After he arrives on the island, Rainsford immediately goes and sees a sign of struggle in bushes and hears shots fired. This, and the way that Rainsford was able to follow the tracks of the hunter, shows that Rainsford is a fairly efficient hunter; that is, showing the audience what the main idea of the story most likely is, which the hunter vs. the hunted.…

Imagine ending up an island that has a very bad reputation by all sailors. At first you think that it is not dangerous, but then you learn about what happens on the island. Rainsford and his friend Whitney were on a boat travelling to Rio. The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a very suspenseful story that shows how Rainsford is very brilliant. Rainsford is on his boat when he falls off and lands in the water and he ends up swimming to the island nearby that all sailors hate sailing past. Rainsford is very smart because when he gets to the island he knows many tricks he learned from hunting for many years and he uses them to help him win against Zaroff. It is commonly believed that if you are in a position of power and authority you will always remain so. In his fictional short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell’s characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff, had the same opinion. Like many individuals, neither men ever expected to be placed in a position of weakness. The deadly conflict that led to both Rainsford and Zaroff hunting and being hunted developed the theme, “strength and power are temporary,” because two once powerful men suddenly fell.…

During the time right after the cold war, the United States and the Soviet Union became engaged in a “Space Race” to see which country could get a man on the moon first and ultimately claim space for their nation. The Soviet Union led the way by sending the first satellite into space and then the first human. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go into space and make a complete orbit around the earth. Yuri was a Russian Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He became an international celebrity over night. He returned to earth as a national hero in his country. His flight is still the shortest flight, 108 minutes from launch to landing. Although Yuri moved up the ranks in the Soviet Air Force, he was banned from the space program.…

Richard Connell has his own ways, that I am going to uncover, of controlling the plot of “The Most Dangerous Game”, which is an attention- grabbing fiction book. The short story starts off with an exposition, that introduces Rainsford, the protagonist, and how he feels about hunting; the author uses a lot of detail to show the story was under a considerable amount of amplification. Richard Connell has several conflicts leading up to a suspenseful climax towards the end of the story, where the author comes out with a plot- twisting climax. He ends the short story with a resolution, that still leaves a bit of confusion on what actually happened. The author, Richard Connell, controls the short story using a first point of view, where an exposition, a climax, and a resolution were used to tell “The Most Dangerous Game”.…

Everyone in this world is influenced by someone or something. Your friends, parents, teachers, and even technology are only a few things that make you the person you are today. So when Rainsford stated that, "The world is made up of two classes: The hunters and the huntees. I agree with Rainsford; everyone is forced or influenced to do things. For example, bullies force you to be stronger, parents push you to be a better person and society pushes you to be the individual you are today.…

From ancient civilizations to the modern day world, our obsession of going into space has grown from studying the stars to actual exploration of space. In a mere forty years, we have had more technological advances than the Industrial Revolution. The Space Race has affected our everyday lives; we use the same technology that the astronauts used during their missions for example digital clocks (Dismukes http://spaceflight.nasa.gov). Many industries have benefited, communication companies, industrial manufacturers, and the…
