The title of the book that I read is Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. It is a fiction book about two people who come from opposite sides of town. One of the main characters is named Brittany, she is from the rich part of town and she seems perfect but she hides what her family is really like. The other main character is a boy named Alex, he lives in a rough part of town with his family and he is part of a gang called Latino Bloods.…
The reader understands that the theme has to do with the relationship that the grandson has with his grandmother. The speaker is able to do things that he thought he would never do for any person. He ate something that was too spicy for him, and he ate it without having to complain about the spice that came from it. He never complained to his grandmother about not wanting to eat the chile. The only thing he did was “and I hiss and drink a tall glass of cold water” (38). He took care of himself and did not let his grandmother down by not eating the food that she provided for him. With this poem, the point was that no matter what, a person always does something they do not want to do for the person that they love. When people have to deal with love and sacrifice, whether it be one at a time or even both they have someone, it could be your mom, dad, brother, girlfriend, boyfriend, you are able to sacrifice anything to make them happy. The poem “Green Chile” is about just that, he writes about the sacrifice he has done for his grandmother and about the ways he did it over respect for…
“Ya esora” he yelled in his broke spanish. Those were the words I waited for twelve hours a day, every day, seven days a week, week after week, and the thought of not hearing the words saddened me”(Jimenez 10). This explains that he is sad of not hearing words to go home from the guy. Later, Panchito when he got home from work he saw that everything they owned was neatly packed in cardboard boxes and then he felt more hours of work and he started to tear up.…
“The Road” by Cormac McCarthy is a journey story set in the setting of an, assumed, post-nuclear war world. The plot of the novel is about a father and his son traveling down a road seeking others like themselves who “carry the fire”. The only destination the author mentions the pair traveling, is ‘South’.…
Pancho villa once said “ its better to die on your feet than to live in your knees.” Pancho was born on June 5th, 1878 in Durango Mexico but on died on June 20th 1973 by assassination. There is a memorial where he was buried called parallel cemetery but story is that his body is not in his grave but somewhere unknown. The reason why his body is not in his grave is because there were contacts still on him to literally take his head, bandits would dig up his body to steal his head and turn it in for a ransom but the feast of his body is unknown. Ernesto villa was panchos last living son until December 31st,2009. His body was buried along with his father at parall cemetery(or what's known to be where his body is at).Pancho villa was a great hero for starting a great rebellious cause against the dictatorship from the Mexican president.…
This book is called Our America: Life and Death on the Southside of Chicago written by Lloyd Jones and LeAlan Newman (1997). The nonfiction book is not part of a series, therefore it stands alone. Not only is LeAlan and Lloyd the authors but they are also the main characters in the novel. LeAlan and Loyd grew up in the inner streets of Chicago. They know from first hand what is is like to live here, because they both have lived here since they were born. They both live just on the opposite sides of the Ida B. Wells. In fact, the Ida B. Wells is directly in the middle of the walking distance from one house to another. Where they live is a very sketchy place and there is a lot of violence. There is a field in-between their houses where the shoot-outs occur and take place. They have seen murders, stealings, shoot-outs and another gang-related crimes.…
The title gave off an aura of sarcasm as he states, “she said, “Dollar thirty,” / I thought, No meat or butter.” It wasn’t really a fair trade, because a dollar thirty for two slices of bread is quite expensive at his time. Neither did the waitress offered meat nor butter. “The man / hesitated, then fumbled for / coins from his pocket,” tells me that the man is poor, because he wouldn’t have been taken aback if he have lots of cash. Only the narrator sympathize the Mexican man as he states, “I stabbed the carrots, / hurting for this man.” I conclude that the bread may not have satisfied the man because he didn’t leave anything on his plate. At the end of the poem, the narrator tells us that the experience had left him a mark, that he wouldn’t forget the memory of that day. The images of the poem reflect the Mexican man’s pride and the narrator’s compassion towards…
“The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolf, tells a story of two brothers with very different lifestyles and perspectives on the world. The main character Pete is a very successful real estate agent in Santa Cruz who tends to get caught up in the materialistic things in life. He always wants his image to appear superior to others, from the house, to the car, to the clothes and he seems to look down upon on those who are not as successful as him. His brother Donald is the exact opposite of Pete and is seen as a loser in his eyes. Donald has no money to his name and drifts from place to place. “The Cathedral” by Raymond Carver tells the story of the interactions between…
This poem starts off in a mellow way: “...his parents boarded him at school in town, slaving to free him from the stony fields”. The main character, Warren Pryor, is graduating and on his way to a flourishing life as a result of his parents many sacrifices. By the last stanza, the innocent tone turns into a belligerent voice: “...his axe-hewn hands upon the paper bills aching with empty strength and throttled rage.” This ultimately expresses Pryor’s point of view. Though he achieves the first steps of the American Dream and completes his parent’s wishes, he is ungratified, ironically. Instead, Pryor prefers to be at the farm he grew up in and working alongside his parents. This shows how the American Dream does not suit everyone, especially Pryor, but he continues on the path of working for the American Dream in fear of disheartening his…
The poem begins explaining to the reader the story of a Mexican American as he worked in an industrial factory at some point in his life. “In the factory I worked, in the fleck of rubber, under a press of an oven yellow with flame.” (Lines 1-3) Soto uses visual imagery to describe the color of the fire that comes out of the oven. “Until the border patrol opened” “Their vans and my boss waved for us to run” (4-5) the speaker demonstrate intensity and a solid imagery. “La Migra” (Spanish slang for border patrol) showed up one day at the plant and the boss ordered Soto to run assuming that the speaker is also illegal. "Over the fence Soto" he shouts (6); at this point, the reader makes the connection between the speaker and the author's name. The boss shouting at Soto represents authority over the speaker. Soto yelled “I am American” (7) but his boss was hesitant to believe him. In response to the speaker statement, the boss replies “no time for lies.” (8) Therefore, the speaker was obligated to escape with the others. Soto was a loyal employee and did what his boss asked, which lead the jog with the Mexican crowd. Here we have a conflict of identity: Soto is Mexican at heart but American in mind something that his boss may not understand. This shows it’s a dramatic poem because you can feel the pressure between the boss and the speaker and you want to continue reading the poem to find out what happens next.…

Today I participated in an assignment designed to help the student to “accept that discrimination exists “ (DeVry College, 2014, week one lecture, p.3). In our society the majority of people are right handed therefore everything is constructed to accommodate that, versus the small minority of people whom happen to be left-handed. Spending the day as a left-handed person was a challenge and lead to a lot of frustration and unaccomplished tasks.…
In the last stanza, the author talks about how hope is everywhere. "I’ve heard it in the chilliest land, and on the strangest sea (9-10)." In this excerpt is conveys to the reader that hope never asks for anything in return, even though it has done so much for us. "Yet, never in extremity, it never asked a crumb of me. (11-12)"…
