Panel Discussion Reflection Essay The panel discussion is a very helpful activity that gave me a lot of feedback and ideas about what to do with my paper and how to make it clearer. Starting out, I explained exactly what I was writing about and why. After I did that, I showed them examples of my research and the different views I have been looking at. My facilitator, Mrs. Davis, told me a lot of useful ways to work what I wanted to do and say into my paper without it coming off as bias and unclear. I think the entire activity went really well. Everything came across how I wanted and I got a lot of positive feedback. Things as little as “instead of just government, saying federal government” will

The feedback I got back from my peers was the same throughout the workshop. What my peers told me was that I needed to be more detailed, because I did not reach the limit of three pages. They also told me to make sure that I not only talk about one concept but that I also talk about the other author. They told me to make sure that I even out the arguments, meaning that I give enough information on both concepts. I learned from my essay that I need to develop my writing techniques more, and learn how to out my thoughts out on my paper.…

The assessment of the neighborhood was completed individually on separate occasions and as a group on our way to a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting. As a group our windshield survey was captured while driving from Northeastern Hospital, west on Allegheny Avenue, and south on Kensington Avenue. The time of the window survey was approximately 5:45 on a warm Tuesday evening. We decided to drive along the smaller side streets after the meeting, in order to get a different view of the community. It was a busy time of the day, many people walking, while others rode bikes to their destinations. The streets were lined with scattered trash, many building stood no longer occupied. Everywhere you looked people were gathered on the sidewalk or sitting on the steps of boarded up storefronts. Some were quenching their thirst from a brown bagged covered bottle. As we pulled up to NA meeting, we sat in the car a few minutes to observe the interaction of the crowd gathered outside of THE LAST STOP which is also a recovery house.…

Before attending an AA or NA meeting, or learning about substance abuse users I always questioned why they would not choose to become sober. When I would see a person who looked like they were a substance abuse user I immediately thought less of them because I thought they were consciously making a choice to live their life like that and they were choosing to live their life that way. On September 11, I attended the Friday Freedom Group at St. Augustine Church in Manchester and the meeting has affected my opinion for life. Since attending the meeting, I no longer have preconceived judgments about substance abuse users. I learned that becoming sober is more than just a choice; it takes more will power and commitment.…

During my practicum I was able to sit in on one PLC meeting. It was a little informal considering the principal was gone and the teachers mostly talked if they wanted to. We went into the teachers lounge and sat around the big table and just talked about who is struggling. We went over what students had troubles reading and how far behind they were. The physical education teacher takes certain students how need extra reading strategies for about twenty minutes. This happens everyday in the classroom I was in and it was always the same people that went for the extra work. Within the classroom that I was in, there were only three students who were in the below average reading line.…

I was a little nervous attending one of these meetings because I didn’t know what to expect but only know from television shows and movies. What is the reality though? I imagined and painted a picture of what an AA meeting would be like. I pictured a room full of people that were obvious addicts, unkept appearances, offensive hygiene and at least one person smelling of alcohol while moving back and forth in the chair. As I entered the room, my perspective laughed at me and as I looked around I was deceived. It was the complete opposite, most of the members of the group were clean, well-kept and looked healthy. I have never been a room full of worried people trying to stay sober because they started the road to sobriety. To keep their…

ENGL 1301 is a broad and informative class, even only being in it for a few week I am already learning a lot. For example, these first few weeks of class I have been learning about the importance of the logos, pathos, and ethos appeals that are so important to the masterdom of the rhetorical situation. With these appeals a writer such as I, will be able to convince this class of my success in joining the discourse community of animal shelter volunteers. A discourse Community is a community of people who share not only knowledge about specific shared topics but also similar backgrounds, values, and share a common language. I will prove in this paper that I successfully entered one of these discourse communities and was accepted by showing my…

    1. Working as a teacher, I am consistently researching into what defines best practice and subsequently reflecting on my own practice to see how I can make improvements. I feel teaching is a unique profession, much alike social work, where you are required to think both on an analytical level and an emotional level on a daily basis. For example, after teaching lessons, I reflect and analyse how successful they were not only based upon how much progress was made, but also by how much engagement and enjoyment the pupils showed.…

    WSPS Meeting Reflection

I learned many things by attending the WSPS meeting on April 6th. I learned that these meetings are much more structured than some of the other clubs and events that I attend. For example, there was budgeted time for announcements, a guest speaker, and final remarks. In many of my undergraduate clubs, meetings are less structured. The timeline is more fluid and there is not a set schedule. In addition to this, I learned about the national APhA meeting in San Francisco this past spring break. By the looks of it, many students had time to explore the city in addition to the conference. I may have to consider doing this if I am a pharmacy student one day. It sounds like the perfect way to interact with others in the field and have a vacation. Lastly, I learned that there are many ways to become involved in pharmacy school. For example, the Relay for Life-UW Madison was being discussed at the meeting. It seemed like an effective way to help the school and community. I would participate in this event if I have an opportunity in the future.…

Is writing for practice and formal study helpful for students? I believe that formal study of writing not important as one would think. I do believe that writing for practice however does provide a useful tool for anybody’s career. We’re all here to progress our careers by obtaining a degree that would be beneficial to the career we have chosen. For example, I have chosen a career in Computer Science. What I have obtained in my 10 years in this field, in a writing sense, is that reports, memos, and emails are essential to my professional development. Writing these items do…

    Speech Reflection

Generally speaking, Abrahams’s five theories are very profound and analytical strategies for managing public speaking anxiety. I typically like how he specifies the ways to manage our fears - behaviorally, visually, biologically, cognitively, and evolutionarily. I also realize that I have already started using some of his strategies. He mentioned, “One clear way to improve your confidence and reduce anxiety is to collaborate with others striving toward the same goal.” (13) I used to be a quiet student in class, who would not raise hand initiatively to answer questions. However, since the first day of this speech class, I realized that this class had the greatest opportunities for me to improve my public speaking skills just by speaking up in the class. I would even force myself to raise my hand, and regard each speaking opportunity as a mini speech. And I would be less fearful in this way, because everybody in the class has the same goal with me. I truly believe the more I practice the better I will be. I also agree that enjoying the entire speaking experience would make me less anxious than just focusing on the speech. It is interesting to know that public speaking anxiety is also related to human biology. Even interactions with others will release some chemicals in your body, which can naturally reduce some of your speaking jitters. (19) I also think, “reframing the speaking situation as a conversation rather than a performance” (23) is a great strategy, since most of us are very comfortable with talking to friends and family. “Replace negative comments with positive affirmations” is also important. It is like an encouragement to ourselves. The last comment I have for this chapter is that I really like the Try. I have tried or imagined most of its situations; they seem to work for me. I think I am also going to test them out on my…

One particular instance where I have overdone my strengths is when I was on the community government for Connor Residence Hall and planned out the end-of-year event called Connorstock. This event is the community’s most popular event as it has the highest attendance by residents than any other events. In addition, Connorstock has been a tradition hosted by the Connor Community since 2005 and having it run successfully was key to maintaining its popularity. Connor Community Government was fully responsible for funding, planning out, and having its members run the event.…

What is public speaking? I used to define public speaking as a simple, casual conversation with my audiences. However, I realize that I was wrong after completing Comm. 20. Through a series of learning objectives for this course, I have come to an understanding that public speaking is actually a life skill. As I progress through this course, these learning objectives have become guidelines for my speeches and helped me improve in my public speaking skills.…
