Panipat textile exporters cheer cotton price slump
Asit Manohar, ET Bureau Jan 25, 2013, 03.31PM IST

PANIPAT: The slump in cotton price from Rs 4,800 per quintal last season to around Rs 4,000 this season has become a blessing in disguise for Panipat-based home textile exporters. It is helping them to contain their input cost by around 5 to 6 per cent. Home-grown textile companies have increased their trade volumes and are passing this margin to consumers in Latin America, Middle East and African markets. Pawan Kumar, a Sonipat-based innovative farmer dealing in cotton said, "Last season, we had sold our cotton at around Rs 4,600 per quintal to around Rs 4,900 per quintal. But, in current season, the return has been in the range of Rs 3,900 to Rs 4,100 per quintal, down by around 20 per cent."
JUMP IN VOLUME

Prem Sagar Vij, president of Panipat Exporters Association said, "The export market of Panipat has been hit by around Rs 1,000 crore in last financial year due to the Euro Zone crisis. This sliding cotton prices are giving us (textile exporters) tab our input cost by around 5 to 6 per cent."

However, lowering price of cotton does not result in increasing the profitability of the Panipat home textile exporters. He said that overseas clients are well aware about this new development in the domestic market as they do while following the rupee-dollar convertibility.

"It is helping us to compete against Pakistani and Bangladeshi products (which are cheaper than Indian home textile products by around 15 per cent to even 20 per cent in some cases) and we are able to dent in their market, especially in Venezuela, Panama, Brazil, UAE, Syria, South Africa. These are the major countries which have shown interest in pursuing business with us this year by shifting their loyalty from Pakistan and Bangladesh."
Prem Sagar Vij said that these markets have the potential to generate around Rs 500 crore-Rs 600 crore per annum (around 15 per cent of the net export

For Bangladesh, the readymade garment export industry has been the proverbial goose that lays the golden eggs for over fifteen years now. The sector now dominates the modern economy in export earnings, secondary impact and employment generated. The events in 1998 serve to highlight the vulnerability of this industry to both internal and external shocks on the demand and supply side. Given the dominance of the sector in the overall modern economy of Bangladesh, this vulnerability should be a matter of some concern to the policymakers in Bangladesh. Although in gross terms the sector’s contributions to the country’s export earnings is around 74 percent, in net terms the share would be much less partially because the backward linkages in textile have been slow to develop. The dependence on a single sector, no matter how resilient or sturdy that sector is, is a matter of policy concern. We believe the policymakers in Bangladesh should work to reduce this dependence by moving quickly to develop the other export industries using the lessons learned from the success of apparel exports. Support for the apparel sector should not be reduced. In fact, another way to reduce the vulnerability is to diversify the product and the market mix. It is heartening to observe that the knit products are rapidly gaining share in overall garment exports as these products are sold in quota-free markets and reflect the strength of Bangladeshi producers in the fully competitive global apparel markets…

Each phase of the cotton textile industry plays a role in the forces of competition, in order to understand the competitive cotton textile industry, a description of the various phases of the cotton textile industry is necessary. The production of cotton and cotton yarn, textile manufacturing, distribution of the t-shirt, and ultimately recycling are the key components of the cotton textile industry. Prior to the 1800s cotton was provided by England and then the United States started growing cotton. Ever since the 1800s the United States has been the primary provider of cotton to the global economy. The success of the United States in the exportation of cotton is due in part to the central location of the continent, ease of access to shipping lanes, climate, innovation in the technology of growing and harvesting, and aggressive governmental subsidies to farmers, and ease of access to cheap labor. Cotton farming started the race to the bottom and cheap labor has been a staple of the entire industry ever since.…

Although competition would intensify in the free market system, it is doubtful that the current top producers (U.S. cotton farmer, China apparel manufacturer) will lose their position in the near future. If the U.S. government removes the direct subsidies to the American cotton farmer, the world market price for cotton would increase by 3% to 15% and weaken U.S. cotton exports. American farmers would not be able to compete on price with farmers outside the U.S. such as those in China, India, Pakistan, or Africa because of their low priced or free family labor. T-shirt manufactures seeking to lower their cost and improve their margins will buy cotton from the cheapest providers. As a result, U.S. farmers will see a decline in their cotton production profits while farmers in emerging and developed nations will see an increase in their income. Over…

Many perceive The Lion King, Disney's most successful movie to date, as Disney's only original movie; the only movie not previously a fairy tale from one country or another. This, however, is not the case. While The Lion King seems not to be biased on a fairy tale, it is in fact strongly based on the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Disney writers cleverly conceal the basic character archetypes and simplified storyline in a children's tale of cute lions in Africa. To the seasoned reader, however, Hamlet comes screaming out of the screenplay as obviously as Hamlet performed onstage.…

Cotton is relatively a minor component of economic activity in developed countries – accounting for 0.12 % of total trade (WTO), but its production plays a major role in some developing countries, like in West Africa. In Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Togo, cotton accounts for 5-10% of the national GDP (World Bank), more than one third of total export receipts and over two-thirds of the value of agricultural exports. In Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon, which are among the largest African cotton producers, cotton production accounts for 1.7 and 1.3 % of their GDP.…

Clothing is drawing more attention, but how to satisfy people’s garment-shopping need with limited budgets is indeed a thorny problem when input prices seem to get higher and higher. Recently, bad weather in China and India, the currently largest producers of cotton, and severe flooding in Pakistan have contributed to shrinking cotton supplies. The cost of cotton, as a result, has gone up almost 80 percent since July. For these reasons, the supply curve for cotton clothing shifts leftward; that is, producers supply less at any given price.…

The opening case explores how three small companies that is Morgan Motors, Malden Mills, and Wadia have fruitfully improved their trades and profit margins through exporting their products to foreign market. Morgan Motors, a company that manufactures sports car in Britain exports almost 70 percent of its products overseas. Wadia, a Michigan-based company that produces high-end compact disc players, relies on exports for eighty percent of its sales output. Malden Mills firm on the other hand is an American based company that manufactures high technology textiles. In the year 2006, the company earned its sales from exports. Malden Mills, the maker of Polartech, a great technology fabric used in loftier priced outwear, tackled a different type of task than Morgan Motors and Wadia. Though the latter two companies created specialty stuffs for small market functions, Malden Mills made a difference and produced a product for a superior market, but a market that was in weakening thanks to globalization and the occurrence of low cost manufacturers in countries that are still developing. Malden Mills, and the South Carolina Export Consortium, looked into new opportunities for its product and gotten a loan from the Export-Import Bank that permitted the firm to utilize its capacity in a better way and improve its markets especially the exports.…

The manufacturing sector of any country bears significant importance. With Pakistan’s exports concentrated largely in textile and semi-manufactures, the country needs to strengthen this sector. Since the foreign-currency subjugated export prices for developing countries are largely determined in the international market, any downward slide in them exerts a downward slide in foreign-exchange export earnings. It is therefore crucial, for a country like Pakistan, to prevent the decline in manufacturing output, not only to sustain but also to increase the export share and hence to gain external competitiveness in this sector.…
