Even more unexpectedly, not only children can learn the basic life point from fairy tale, but also adults are able to realize the complex relationship between people and the human’s heart. “The Frog Prince” is a fairy tale, which best known through the Brothers Grimms’ written version and is the first story in their collection. It shows a spoiled princess reluctantly be friends a frog, who magically transform into a handsome prince. “The Pig King” was written by Giovanni Francesco Straparola in his The Facetious Nights of Straparola. These two fairy tales are a little similar because of almost the same experience of the two protagonists whose appearance is animal in the story. Nevertheless, one of them does not experience the cruel plots; and another nearly is killed by his wife yet. Through the different plots between “The Flog Prince” and “The Pig King”, Brothers Grimm and Giovanni illustrate how the heroines have different attitudes to the princes why the two princes’ quality is two extremes: “sunny” and “dusky”. In my opinion, personal value is the main reason to cause the differences happened on them. Also, by other character, personal value prompts their speech and behavior in the fairy tale.
The difference between “The Frog Prince” and “The Pig King” is the quality of heroines because of the attitudes of the Princes that one is aversion and another is pardon. Chen 2

On the one hand, the prince of the princess of “The Frog Prince” who pays attention to appearance, isn't exactly a tall, strong, handsome, human prince. For example, by the phase: “Then the frog put his head down, and dived deep under the water; and after a little while he came up again, with the ball in his mouth, and threw it on the edge of the spring.” (Grimm ) The frog prince helps the princess to get her golden ball, but she does not real want to carry out the promise because she thinks her prince is a frog, a prince as a lover, who helps her retrieve her lost ball. Even though the frog prince does not have handsome appearance, he has attributes that a prince should have. The frog prince in every possible way to care for the princess, but she still dislikes him and uses violence to him. However, when the prince proposes marriage to the princess with handsome human surface, she unexpectedly agrees with him. From this action, the princess is absolutely a realist, so she only cares about the advantages of external. The transformation of the prince is only appearance, his qualities and heart is as same as when he is a frog. The prince may think the princess not real love him because of the huge different attitude. On the other hand, the heroine of “The Pig King” is a prudent and wise girl because she is nice to the prince even though he is a pig. From the fairy tale: “She raised the coverlet and bade him lie near to her and put his head upon the pillow, covering him carefully with the bed-clothes and drawing the curtains so that he might feel no cold”(Straparola: 46). This sentence shows how the girl cares for the prince, which uses a clearly description to display good quality of the girl. She is not satisfied with the marriage, and she tries her best to make her and the prince to find happiness. Thus, even Chen 3

though all of princes and princesses have good endings, reader can learn the different personal value by their attitudes. Next, the psychology of the two princes is also different, because the prince from “The Frog Prince” is a persistent person and another prince from “The Pig King” is dark and he cannot survive frustration. The frog prince was rejected by the princess many times. For example: by the phase: “At this sight she was sadly frightened, and shutting the door as fast as she could came back to her seat.”(Grimm ) Even though the princess stops the prince through the door, he does not adopt a violent way. He does not change her attitude because of one failure. Inversely, he is trying to show his best side to the princess to make her love him. In contrast, the pig prince seems like an extreme person because he does a number of the extremes such as: killing people, running away from palace, and threatening the queen. For example: “At last the girl assented to take the pig prince for a husband; but her fate was no happier than her sister’s, for the bridegroom killed her, as he had killed his other bride, and the fled headlong from the palace.”(Straparola: 45) He thinks his second wife will kill him, so he who strikes first gains the advantage. He just kills her because she expresses a little dissatisfaction, which displays his narrow-mindeness. Also, he does not recognize himself that whether he is suit for marriage or not. He has not a mental for living together with others so that a serious of tragedies to happened. This is the reason why these two fairy tales have the two extreme plots.
Finally, the personal value causes the different speech and behavior of the character from each fairy tale, so different values lead these fairy tales to be more Chen 4

colorful and more pregnant. For instance: because the king from “The Frog Prince” lays emphasis on credit, he forces her daughter to finish her promise, through the phase “Then the king said to the young princess, 'As you have given your word you must keep it; so go and let him in.”(Grimm ), readers are more aware of how important the promise to the king. As a father, he may think his daughter marries with a man who is adept with both the pen and the sword, but he still let the princess finish her promise, which causes readers image how creditable king he is. Furthermore, in “The Pig King”, the behavior of the prince’s first wife is also root in her personal value. “What am I to do with this foul beast? This vary night, while he lies asleep, I will kill him” (Straparola: 44) said by the prince’s first wife. From this phase, reader can realize her personal value that is in order to gain profit by any kind of means. Author uses the different personal values to build vivid character in the fairy tales, which motivates readers’ keen interest and deep thinking.
All in all, through the different personal values in “The Frog Prince” and “The Pig King”, reader can be able to understand the protagonists’ differences and fairy tales’ main idea that is people should have a sincere heart. In my opinion, fairy tales will use the bad ending to warm people what kind of person people should not be, and use the good ending to teach people what kind of qualities people should have.
