Papa Chapter 1 Summary
Charles Van Doren once said,“I've learned a lot about good and evil. They are not always what they appear to be”. Often we tend to judge people off of what we first see in them; many times we let their words and actions describe them before we really get to know them and their intentions. One of the main characters, Papa, as expressed in the book, often denies helping others because he knows that it is best for him and his son's survival. The book starts out with two unnamed characters, Papa and the boy. They are in an apocalyptic type situation and they trying to get to the coast and head south, where it is warm. Their main goal is survival, and during their route to the coast, the father does anything in his power to keep his son safe. In …show more content…
As the two progress through the tretourous cold and snow they encounter a house where they believe they might actually get a break. They are always hungry and low on supplies. Once they get in the house the author describes that they ran into a cellar, the father figured there would be some type or rations within it. Once they got down there they saw two naked people that were begging for help, one had a terrible injury with a limb missing. The father reacts quick saying to the boy to hurry out of the house, when they get up out of the cellar they see four mean heading towards the house and the book it to the woods (110). The father instinctively reacts within this situation to get him and his boy out of the house as quickly as possible. The father knew they would not be able to help the two as they did not even have enough food for themselves. Not only that, if they would have stayed they would have been captured by the four men. This last piece doesn’t necessarily make it good, but it does show how fortunate they were by the Father making this decision. The Father again instinctively acted upon the situation because he knew if they …show more content…
The father has killed someone, he has abandoned two helpless people and left them in a cellar to die, and he has taken back everything from a homeless man and more, including the clothes from which the man had already owned. These three actions are truly evil, no matter what anyone says, this is evil, unless justified through reasoning. The Father only mission is to keep his son safe and alive. Any parent would do these things if was to keep their kid alive. Given the circumstances, in a apocalyptic type situation, it is every man for themselves. With these given situations and morals as a parent, the actions by the Father are more than justified, which truly shows what makes the Father a good character. His mission is to do this for his son, and care for him just like every Father was put on this earth

Within the short story “Daughter” by Enskine Caldwell a father named Jim discusses why he had slain his own daughter earlier that morning, and upon completing the story I’ve concluded that the father should've not been freed, and should be subject to the mercy of the enraged crowd.I believe so for various reasons, including his lack of empathy for his slain daughter, his reasoning, and his obvious inability to understand the terrible act he made. These elements create a clear conclusion that Jim should face the sentence he created for himself and face the mercy of the crowd.…

In this short story“ Powder,” Tobias Wolf tells an adventure about a boy and his father on Christmas Eve. This story is an example that sometimes not all relationships between a father who lives apart from his son are not always good, and parents do things to get their kid’s trust once again. In this story Tobias father asks his mother of he could take his son skiing at Mount Baker, even though her mother is mad at him for trying to sneak her son into a concert. After hours of begging she relented and his father promised to take care of Tobias hand on heart, and I’m sure his father did a great job doing it.…

It is clear that they only have each other’s company and that the father feels that his only job is to protect his son from any danger. However, the son’s purpose is to “carry the fire”, a metaphor that keeps readers guessing about what the fire reflects. It could be that the father and son both carry their morals; they do not steal from the living, kill or eat others. Alternatively, it could be seen that the boy is carrying the fire to lead humanity forward, towards a better future. Their relationship doesn’t change dramatically in the novel. However despite their beliefs, the father begins to go against them. He steals from the living and kills two people. Although these were done in order to protect his son, the boy became upset with his father when he took back their belongings from a man who stole from them, leaving him with nothing. This portrays the child’s caring personality. He is very different from his father; he trusts others and wants to help them.…

The main character, Robert Hayden, lives in a poor environment with his father. However, his father always supports Robert so that he can have the life that others are receiving for granted. Hayden writes, “Sundays too my father go up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold and made banked fires blaze” (Hayden, 4). Hayden mentions that his father “got up early” and “made banked fires blaze.” These two phrases illustrates a clear image in the reader’s mind of Robert’s father waking up in the dark, cold morning and starting a warm fire for Robert so that he isn’t cold when he sleeps. This action of the father demonstrates that he cares for his son so much, that he sacrifices his own time, which he could be using otherwise, to use it for the best of his child. Therefore, it was the father’s choice to use his time to support his…

The father from the short story “Once upon a time” had displayed signs of being cautious throughout the narrative, because of the recent events and riots that have rattled the environment. Notably, the father seems to only take action when he heeds advice from individuals that he had spoken to. In fact, when the mother requested for the housemaid to feed the dwellers outside of the Suburb, but regardless, the trusted housemaid did not consider it to be a marvelous idea and the husband agreed with her: “...but the trusted housemaid said these [people] would come and tie her up and shut her in the cupboard. The husband said She’s right. Take heed of her advice.…

In this story, we hear about an 8-year-old boy and his divorced parents – along with the mother’s new man, Jim. First of all, it doesn’t seem like the boy and his dad sees each other very often. The man and his son are spending time together for the first time in 4 months, and therefore – they have planned to accompane each other on an expedition. The mother clearly states that she finds the situation somehow ridiculous, and sees the father as being very irresponsible. In the start of the story, we can already feel that the boy has a very good interest for his father. The narrator explains what the boy is feeling, when he stands by, and watches the father from a close distance. He seems very masculine, strong and brave from the boy’s point of view. “The boy is intent. Watching Dad. Watching what Dad is. Drinking it in: the essence of Dadness” (P.7.l. 8). When it comes to the stepfather, Jim – it seems like the boy is having problems accepting him. He needs to force himself greatly, just to even answer him properly.…

In the story the reader are being introduced to a father and his son. The father is taking his son on a camping trip as an attempt to trying to connect with his son. They have to cross a river, which is a very demanding task. We hear that the father has just been divorced and he picks up his son at his ex-wife’s house, where you get the impression that it is a bit tense between them, maybe because he has disappointed her through the years of their marriage. He also says, right in the beginning on page 1, line 5 that he hasn’t been happy for a while and later he says that he also hasn’t cared much about anything lately.
