For my fourth concert report I attended the University of Florida Flute Ensemble Concert, on Tuesday April 16th, 2013 at 7:30pm in the Music Building Room 101. There were four main flutists and one composer but later in the concert during the last two works the whole flute studio was included. The four main flute students were Amy Adams, Margaret Chou, Kelsey Greene and Andy Huang. I have attended another concert in this room but was surprised to see about double the number of people since the last concert and was excited to see the show. The auditorium was small but I enjoyed that because it was quaint and made me feel more comfortable because there was not that many people there and it was more of an intimate setting. Admission to the ensemble was free which was a benefit to the people in attendance so they could enjoy of little bit of music for no cost. First on the program was Grand Quartet in E Minor by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832). Kuhlau was a concert pianist and a composer of the Danish opera; he composed over 200 works in his lifetime. The first work the ensemble preformed was Andante Maestoso, the intro to the song was very soft, and it had a sense of a nature vibe to the melody. The pitch then proceeded to escaladed higher; at points during the work it was changing from all four flutes playing in unison to just one stand out flute and the rest in a base beat. I really enjoyed the change of pace throughout the song and how one flute stood out showed off that person’s unique set of skills that maybe differs them from the rest of the ensemble. The work ended in a very fast paced rhythm and there was no insinuation that the work was going to end because there was no build up to the finale of the work. I really enjoyed this piece but the only down fall was it was very long and none of the other songs in the ensemble were nearly that long. The second work of the ensemble was a collection of four different separate pieces all by the same composer

The 3rd work was mostly a dance, with the piano playing. It featured a crescendo in the beginning, and the harmony was polyphonic. The piano player and trumpet player begin playing at the end. The 4th work was called Three More Foxes. This piece was very easy to hear, and was highly syncopated. The composer stood in the front and conducted his piece at a fast tempo. It had accents at different levels, not an easy tune to hum to. It will suddenly get louder. The end is the loudest, towards the end becoming dissonance.…

The second piece I am going to discuss is the Symphony No.2 in D Minor, Op. 36 composed by Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827). It was in the Classical period, and the genre of it is Symphony because of it had four movements. The first movement is in the Adagio molto form, the second movement is in the Larghetto form, the third movement is in the Scherzo: Allegro form which breaks the rule of most of symphonies, and the fourth movement is in the Allegro molto form. The length of the work is about thirty-five minutes and…

The second piece featured the flute with piano accompaniment. The beautiful and enchanting sounds of the flute reminded of music I would hear from the Romantic Era. This composition was very expressive, but I would not say virtuoso. I believe that the ornamentation that I heard was written into the piece and not improvised by the performer. The overall mood is love, upbeat, consonance, and very melodic in duple meter. The flute used dynamic going from piano to forte, and…

The second piece was the Concerto for Trumpet, 1. allegro (sonata) originally by Joseph Haydn. The performer’s name was Jose Sanchez. This piece was performed with a piano accompaniment. It was like talking back to each other, like a conversation which was very enjoyable in my…

Polka and Fugue from the Opera “Schwanda, The Bag Piper” was another piece I found fascinating. It was a Chek Folk tale which told the story about the lonely bag piper and his adventures. It started out with the woodwinds playing the theme of a cheery thrill note and triplet. The feel of the music was cheery and you were almost able to hear the story being told. I also enjoyed hearing the Fugue part of the song because that was also something we discussed in class. The fugue was characterized by imitation and variation on the imitation by different sections throughout the band.…

When I began this project I thought that we would be able to choose our concert. Obviously I found otherwise. However, I have always been in love with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. I once heard a piano concerto in B flat minor by him that I fell in love with. That being said, when I saw him on the list of people I could choose from I once again became excited. I listened to symphony number four, analyzed by Gerard Schwarz.…
