The Writing Process
The writing process is a systematic process to develop a clear and effective paper. Many college students like myself, use it and you will learn in this English 101 class exactly how to use the steps of the writing process. The three main steps of the writing process which are, prewriting, drafting, and revision will lead you to write a very successful paper and help you better your writing. The writing process is a unique set of tools that many people use all throughout their life. The first step to writing is Prewriting, this is a step often times many students over step. Almost everything you will write in college will begin as an assignment in some way. Make sure that you understand the assignment and set limits to your papers. This means access the length, purpose, audience, and occasion and your own knowledge of the subject. When developing the length often the professor will set the limits on how long they want it to be. The next step is developing the purpose of the paper and what you should say and how you should say it. In general, you can classify your purpose for writing according to your relationship with the audience in the form of expressive writing, informative writing, and persuasive writing. There are other forms of writing but these are the general types of papers you will write in college. Once you figure out what type of paper you need to write, you need to develop a genre for the paper. Both the purpose and genre kind of go hand and hand once you figure out one, you can develop the other. After all of this you can brainstorm ideas about your topic. You can brainstorm in groups or individually, whatever helps you come up with ideas. This leads us to the next step which is to developing an audience. An audience can be an individual, specialized, general, and a universal audience. All of these types of audience have different numbers and different types of people, so in order to have an effective paper you need to develop an audience. Next step is the knowledge step and to realize what you do and don’t know about the topic that you’re writing about. The final step of the prewriting stage is coming up with a thesis statement. A thesis is an announcement of you intent, and or a statement of fact. All of these steps are part of the prewriting stage of writing. The second step to writing is the Drafting process here you will actually develop your paper. The first step is to think how to arrange your material into an essay. The part of an essay includes the introduction, which is usually one paragraph long. Then you have the body also called the middle section, of your essay develops your thesis. This is the support part of your paper that convinces your audience your thesis is reasonable. Each body paragraph should be unified. The main idea of the paragraph is stated in a topic sentence. Like a thesis a topic sentence acts as a guidepost, making it easy for readers to follow the paragraph. The final step of drafting is your conclusion. Like your introduction, your conclusion is rarely longer than a paragraph. Regardless of its length, however, your conclusion should be consistent with the rest of your essay. The conclusion shouldn’t introduce any new points and just wrap up things you have already previously stated. The final step of the writing process is the Revision stage. In this stage you will read over your paper and edit and change whatever needs to be done. Before you print your paper out and hand it in you always need to edit and proofread it. When editing, you search for grammatical errors, check punctuation, and look over your sentence structure. Then you need to proofread your paper, you look for surface errors, such as spelling errors, typos, incorrect spacing, or problems with essay’s format. Here you look carefully for any errors. Finally check your thesis and make sure your body supports your thesis statement.
In conclusions these are the steps of the writing process. When writing the systematic steps of writing is used to help you develop a more effective style of writing. All the steps I have previously stated before will help you carry out the writing process. If you as a college student follow these steps you will be a successful writer.
