Furthermore, her characteristics align with that of the ‘Mammy’ archetype, and she is portrayed as an elderly, loving motherly figure, providing to her family’s needs. However, she is also depicted as somewhat uneducated and bound by the traditions of her past, which reinforces the ‘Mammy’ archetype, of a women who despite being a caring motherly figure, does not know much outside of her household duties due to a lack of opportunity to further educate herself. This ‘uneducated’ attitude can be particularly seen through Mama’s interactions with Beneatha, a more educated and modern young female characters, in their discussions regarding heritage and education. Mama is unable to understand Beneatha’s refusal to assimilate and need to express herself as an African-American women who is proud of her heritage, asking her continuously ‘what is it you want to express?’ This creates a sense of irony around the situation by displaying Mama’s lack of understanding towards Beneatha’s desire to destroy societies black stereotypes, whilst allowing Hansberry to simultaneously reinforce the concept that Mama is a stereotypical character stuck in the ‘Mammy’ archetype and unable to break out of it.…

I remember the night my dad left like it was yesterday, and I don’t think I will ever forget. I don’t remember what exactly it was that made him so mad but I’m sure my sister and I were fighting like sisters do. My only really vivid memory of that night was my dad hitting me so hard he left bruise marks on my backside. I could hear my mom and dad fighting so I knew my mom saved me again. Then my dad got really mad at her and he grabbed her by the shoulders and shoved her into the pantry door so hard that both my mom and the pantry door came crashing to the floor. When I got up for school the next morning my dad was gone. Some children aren’t as lucky though and Child Protective Services has to remove them from a bad situation.…

The connection between mother and son is untradeable. There is inevitable love that pushes a mother to do absolutely anything because of the maternal instinct that is bestowed within. Unconditional motherly love releases the “super power” inside a desperate mother in need of her child. In the novel “Son,” Lois Lowry uses characterization in the main character, Claire, to demonstrate her courage, desperateness, and mental, as well as physical, strength that strives her to find her son. Born in an utopian society, Claire is assigned her role as a birthmother. After something goes terribly wrong in her birth, she is reassigned to the fish hatchery. After overhearing her son is number thirty-six in the Nurturing center, she creates a friendship with the Nurturer so she can secretly see her growing son. The village elders decide, at one year old, he is not suitable for a family and would be killed. The Nurturer’s son, Jonas, runs off with the baby and Claire sets off on a ship to find them. Her body washes up on shore of another village without any memory of what happened. After listening to a little girls’ conversation, Claire thinks “This baby in my belly makes me forgetful, one little girl had said. Claire, working now with Alys, preparing the herbs for Bethan’s mother, understood what the child was pretending. Why did it make Claire feel so unbearably sad?”(Lowry 153). Lois Lowry uses indirect characterization to illustrate…

I hate my foster mama, and so does many other people. She is way too violent all the time: “She possessed the unique ability to aggravate almost anyone she ever met” (Zusak 35). She has a temper issue. When she cannot control her temper, she usually beats me with a wooden spoon. Also, she swears too much. I have had no idea that… certain words existed until she would not stop using them. Because of her, I can swear fluently in German and English. Some adults might say, “What’s so bad about swearing?” Sure it is okay for adults to swear, but I am ten. Why is it a good idea to let a ten-year-old girl know how to swear fluently in two languages? I hat my foster mama so much. Actual mama, why could you have not kept me? Both of our lives would…

My Dad had absolutely nothing to do with me from birth to when I turned 15 years old. I grew up with my Mom, and my one older sister. My Mom always had a really good friend whom I called my aunt, who helped her out for years and years. I became very close with her, and she would always help pay for expenses and would always come to extracurricular activities. Let’s rewind to my Mom’s life before kids. My mom did not live in a very good situation. Her Mom had 3 different men in her life and 4 kids from 2 different men. My Grandma slept with a guy at a party when she was dating somebody at the time, and got pregnant with my Mom. My Mom never knew her Dad and grew up thinking that her step dad was her actual Dad. When I was 4, my Grandma was dying of lung cancer when she told my Mom about her real Father. I never knew my Grandma, but I wish I had because I think I would be a different person today if I had a relationship with her. My Mom had 3 girls with 2 different men. Her first husband, was a no-good Father who went to prison so they got a divorce. My oldest sister left my Mom to live with her Grandma who bribed her into living with her, and my Mother was too young and dumb to stop it. I was an oopsy. At my Mom’s current job, she met a man who she must have had an affair with, and that is how I got here. I guess at the time my Mom thought she could raise me on her own and did not even try to get my Dad to be in my life. My Mom has had multiple boyfriends and potential husbands walk in and out of her life, but still has no luck with guys, and I keep hoping to myself that if she did, then she would be completely…

My mom never screamed at me before and when she screamed he blamed me for letting him go outside without his permission. One sunny day, we were remodeling the living room so it can be more babyproof now that my brother was taller and could walk and run perfectly. We left the door open because it was too cold in the living room. We were moving the couch as we told Andres to move over so we don’t locate the couch on his feet. We were so busy moving the furniture that we totally forgot the baby of the family was walking towards the door. When we put the couch in our desired spot, we noticed Andres walking toward the street. We ran after him as quickly as we could as we saw a car moving in Andres’s direction. My dad sprinted like a track and field athlete towards his baby and caught him right in time. All of a sudden, my mom turned to me and blamed me for this incident. I felt like my side of the story wasn’t considered when I explained she told me to help her with the couch and it was really Andres’s fault. She couldn’t believe I was blaming a baby so she sent me to my room. I ran to my room crying, feeling as if Andres was the favorite child and I wished that I never had a…

She took him up on it. As the story goes they started sort of dating again. Within four months they decided to give it a try again and try to make it work. As a young child I almost never heard my mother raise her voice to my father. They have been married for over twenty years now and I would consider all of them to be happy. She had gone to college to become a journalist and that's where she met my father. The two fell in love and got married before graduation. I suppose priorities or even interest changed because she never became a journalist. Selfishly, I'm glad she didn't as I have had her full attention since I was born. A couple years ago I was making my way home from school and I could hear a commotion coming from inside of the house. I dropped my things and I ran inside to find my mother crying and raising her fist at my father. Her eyes were filled with tears and her voice strained with anger. Silence fell on the room when they both saw that I was now present. My first instinct was to go to my dad and defend him, being as she was the one that appeared to be the aggressor. My mother just fell to the floor and wept. My father then instructed me to go to my room and they would talk to me at dinner. Of course I insisted on staying but I was directed once again to give them their privacy. An hour or so later I was called to dinner and it was then that I was filled in on what had been happening in our home. My father had been seeing another women for the past six months and my mother had just learned about this earlier today. You can imagine how embarassed I was to have defended him in the same room only a few short hours prior.…

1555 West Warehouse Drive, was where my dad had moved to, which was his metal fabrication shop. He built a second story and created an apartment out of it, but it was not a home. I had got into the routine of going to stay the night at my dad's on tuesdays and fridays. I must say that I became exceptional at packing an overnight bag. There was this woman Jane who shared my dads shop, she would hold her art classes there. I really enjoyed being around Jane. She had amazing talent and was always complementing me on my art when it was horrible. My father sat me down one day and I found out that she was my soon to be step mom. After this information was given me I wanted to ask questions. The questions were only directed to my counselor, and of course she would never have the answers I was looking for. I decided that I wasn’t going to mention the divorce to my mom because that would just make her cry. I eventually decided to just live with what I knew and went on living the most normal life I could. Throughout the years I had gotten use to the idea of Jane always being around.…
