Paper and Dumas Book
HISTORY 2112
Due date: December 4
Paper Length: 4 Pages
Write a paper answering the questions below using examples from the Dumas book and the course (but you MUST use the Dumas book as a resource).

What does Dumas’ decision to take an American name suggest about her feelings toward her adopted country? How does her dual identity enable her to see how Americans "really" feel about Iran? Dumas’ husband, François, experiences life as an American immigrant much differently than does Dumas. What do you think accounts for Americans’ biases in their attitudes toward immigrants from different countries? To what extent are these biases grounded in stereotypes about the immigrants’ native countries? Evaluation:
You will be graded on:
Organization- Does the paper have an introduction, body, and conclusion? Does the paper have a central argument (thesis) that appears in the introduction and conclusion?
Grammar, punctuation, and style- For example, does the writer use the past tense consistently? See
“additional considerations” below.
Use of the text- Does the paper successfully incorporate specific examples from the book? Do the examples support the paper’s thesis? Since this is still a relatively short paper, avoid long block quotes.
Be succinct. In addition, avoid long summaries of the book. Your paper should be built around examples that support your thesis.
You must, however, cite the books to support your claims. In each instance that you draw specific information from the book, you should insert the page number from which the idea or quote originated at the end of the sentence.

Dumas then decides to change her name so she would not stand out anymore. A quote from Dumas States, “When I was twelve, I decided to simplify my life by adding an American middle name” (Page 63). She strengthens more of her decision by explaining how she is tired of people not being able to pronounce her name right, or also making fun of her name. At last she chose the name Julie for its simplicity. Dumas states, “Thus I started sixth grade with my new, easy name and life became indefinitely simpler” (Page 65). Her decision to take an American name suggests that her feelings toward her adopted country was that all she ever wanted was to fit in and not to be an outsider. When she went to college she went back to using her real name and during that time period it was the start of an Iranian revolution. After graduating she tried looking for a job but was always getting rejected because of her name. Instead she went back to using Julie as her name and it was a coincidence that she started getting job offers. Mostly during that time Americans did not want to hire…

In 1972 the Iranian family, the Dumas, had moved to America for a brief time. In this time young Firoozeh lived in Whittier, California and was attending a public school there. After her short stay there she could only remember the positives from her stay, but she could also remember how her ancestors were treated when they first immigrated to America. When the first wave of Islamics had moved to America, they were not treated the best. My perception of the Dumas tells me that they might have expected the same treatment when they had first thought of coming here but they quickly found otherwise. Not only were they treated fairly, but they were able to teach many people about their ways. She had talked to students at her school and they asked about common stereotypes and she had some funny answers.…
