Abstract
This research paper is based on the skeletal pathological condition known as scoliosis. Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral bending and twisting of the vertebral column. The following paper presents research on causes along with possible complications that can arise while acquiring this condition. Additional research on tests/exams available to help diagnose scoliosis and how it appears radiographically is also discussed. Lastly, treatment alternatives available to those individuals affected by scoliosis, such as observation, bracing and surgery, are also considered.
Scoliosis
According to American Association of Neurological Surgeons, scoliosis affects 6 to 9 million people in the United States. (“Scoliosis”, 2007) Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. The excessive curvature portrays a letter C or S. Scoliosis can develop at infancy or early childhood, most commonly during puberty, but can also develop in late adulthood. When evaluating a patient for diagnosis, doctors normally break down the causes into subcategories to classify the correct type of scoliosis the patient has.

Scoliosis can develop in infancy or early childhood. However, the primary age of onset for scoliosis is 10-15 years old, occurring equally among both genders. Females, however, are eight times more likely to progress to a curve magnitude that requires treatment. Every year, scoliosis patients make more than 600,000 visits to private physician offices, an estimated 30,000 children are fitted with a brace, and 38,000 patients undergo spinal fusion surgery. (“Scoliosis,” 2007) Luckily for those millions of people there are many different treatment and management options to help patients cope with the
