AP Open Lit. Question
1. Paradise Lost, John Milton, 1667/1674
2. God- the almighty power who controls all life on Earth
Satan- rebel angel who wanted to do what he wanted rather than live under God’s rules but was God’s most beautiful angel who decided to head to the dark side
Adam- God’s creation, man who disobeyed God’s orders and sinned
Eve- another one of God’s creations, woman who disobeyed God’s orders and sinned just like Adam

Book One: Milton talks about “man’s first disobedience”, Satan fell from heaven, Satan talks to the rebel fallen angels, descriptions of rebel angels, Satan talks to his fallen angels about the battle that they may not have won but God’s army is undefeatable, rebel angels dig for gold, those angels enter Pandemonium.
Book Nine: Milton claims that his poem is better than others, Satan seeks revenge on God, Adam and Eve appear in the Garden of Eden, Satan decides to seek revenge by destroying their innocence, Eve sees Satan who appears as a snake in the garden, Satan convinces Eve to eat an apple from the Tree of Knowledge, she tells Adam to eat even though he doubts her, Adam eats it, they commit sin and are confused about what happened after they pass out, and they start blaming each other.

6. Milton decided to write this to show the world the true grace of God but in all honesty made God seem like a coward and seem like he doesn’t want to change things he know will happen because he wants people to need him.
