Paramecium have protoplasm, which is a jelly-like fluid inside the paramecium that’s like “the stuffing” of the cell. In the protoplasm is where materials of and in the paramecium are located. Paramecium are also covered with cilia. Cilia is tiny hairs that cover the outside and they help the paramecium move. Paramecium use the cilia to move by moving the cilia back and forth and this allows paramecium to move through water and in all different directions. Paramecium also contain two different types of nuclei, micronuclei and macronuclei. It wouldn’t be able to survive without the macronuclei, as it is responsible for normal, everyday activities and it couldn’t reproduce without the micronuclei. …show more content…
The cilia on the outside that assist the paramecium with its movement also assist when the paramecium eats. As the cilia is moving back and forth to move the paramecium, it also pushes food into the “mouth” of the paramecium, where the food goes down a tube called the gullet to the protoplasm. There, the food is held in food vacuoles where they will be used and digested, and the nutrients will be distributed throughout the cell. The paramecium also has contractile vacuoles on both ends. These contractile values get rid of excess water that the paramecium absorbed through osmosis from its surroundings. Paramecium eat algae, bacteria, yeasts, and dead organic
