Basic Ambulance Assistant Level 5 10/07/2014 This practically orientated 4 weeks Basic Ambulance Assistant course is presented since 1994 by de Vries Ambulance Academy. The course will enable you to assist in emergencies or starting your own First Aid classes and its improve your job opportunities.
Students will be taught about medical and trauma emergencies in accordance with the published curriculum by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) Professional Board of Emergency Medical Care. The course includes the following subjects:
Medico legal Law
Health Professions Council Protocols for Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Personnel
Human anatomy and physiology
Emergency medical equipment Emergency vehicles and driving
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for adult, child and infant victims
Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for adult, child and infant victims
Automated external defibrillation
The Basic Life Support Mega-Code
Airway management and the use of adjuncts
Oxygen therapy and the use of oxygen delivery devices
Ventilatory management
Patient assessment
Patient positioning
Completion of patient records and reports
Pain and pain relief
Shock The kinematics of trauma
Soft tissue injuries and hemorrhage
Head, facial and spinal injuries
Chest and abdomino-pelvic injuries
Musculo-skeletal injuries (including splints and splinting techniques)
Environmental injuries (lightning, radiation, heat illnesses, cold illnesses, near drowning, decompression illness)
Envenomation, bites and stings
Poisoning and Over dosage
Cardiovascular emergencies
Stroke
Respiratory emergencies
The acute abdominal emergencies
Epilepsy and seizure disorders
Diabetes Mellitus and diabetic emergencies
Obstetric emergencies and childbirth
Pediatric emergencies
Crisis intervention and special patients

Ambulance communications The cost:
1. To secure your booking R4500 upon registration, R2000 on or before the first day (Saturday) of the course and the remainder R2000 is payable before the third (3rd) Monday of the course. Total cost R8 500.00 per student. This tariff includes: Textbook, pouch with mouthpiece, gloves and a DVD of your course. Accommodation free during the course
1. The following is essential: Stethoscope and Blood Pressure Cuff or R140.00
2. A snake specialist presents lecture on poisons stings and bites and shows a variety of snakes.
3. Sport facilities: heated swimming pool, volleyball, soccer, netball, trampoline etc.

Please take along the following: notebook, pen and pencil, small lock and key, food (groceries), cooking and eating utensils (e.g. plate, cup, plastic food containers, fork and spoon), 2 sheets, pillow, blanket, laundry pegs.
Recommended clothing: Jeans and T-shirts. You will have practical sessions that require working on your hands and knees.
Contact the academy beforehand if you suffer from any physical condition/ disabilities that might prevent you in participating in activities such as heavy lifting or physical exercise.

Due to safety regulations no person with an infectious disease is allowed on the premises.
