Parental Monitoring Issue
Technology has become a very important part in our every day life. In most parts of the world, people use different kinds of computers, smartphones, and tablets. Since the Internet became popular, has been used by children. According to Lucy Battersby, Dr. Campbell, the senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Sydney, said, "the social media sites favored by children, such as Moshi Monsters, Club Penguin and Stardoll, are monitored by parents and primarily used for games. However, Dr. Campbell was alarmed to see up to 31 percent of children under 11 had used Facebook, particularly if this replaced face-to-face interaction." When children reach puberty, they are beginning to use social networks. However, children can use the Internet improperly. The Internet in general as well as cell phones create many problems for children and parents. Children may be exposed to different dangers and troubles. Parents should monitor their children while they are using the Internet to see how they use it.
As soon as children begin to use the Internet, parents should supervise them. They can put a computer in the living room to watch what their children are doing. When the parent is near, a child won't be surfing the web. Parents should know what sites their children surf, how much information about themselves they put onto the Internet, what kind of pictures they share with other people, and what the content of messages they use. When parents know all these things, they will know what their children are thinking about and in what way they should educate their prevent them from making bad decisions. Parents should monitor their children, so they do not go meeting with strangers in real life who they first met on the Internet because a kind and good-looking man or woman from social networks may actually turn out to be a criminal.
Parents also should protect their children from other dangers on the web. Parents should supervise their children because they may be exposed to cyberbulling. Cyberbullying is when a person is being humiliated, harassed, and threatened through the Internet and cellphones. When children use social sites without any limitation, they more likely to be victim of cyberbullying. Lucy Battersby says, "The teenagers most likely to be cyber-bullied were females aged between 12 and 17 who used Facebook daily. And 38 percent of people had ended a friendship over their bad experience, 32 percent had a face-to-face confrontation and 41 percent has felt 'nervous about going to school the next day.'" These numbers once again prove that children should not use the Internet without parental control. They cannot adequately respond to threats from the Internet. For instance, if teenagers were subjected to cyberbullying, they are often afraid to tell anyone about their problem and seek help. They may enter into a state of depression and could go as far as committing suicide. If parents monitor children, they will be able to notice strange things in the child's behavior and act on time to prevent irreversible consequences.
Some critics believe that teenagers as well as adults can control all their actions. Therefore, when teenagers find out that their parents supervise them, they get angry and want to have their private life. Of course teenagers want their privacy. They want to communicate with who they want and to do what they want. They think that they already have grown up and can control their lives by themselves. Children conflict with parents trying to prove that they are. However, practice shows that teenagers do not fully understand that they are doing something wrong. According to Judith Woods, "Recent research by the NSPCC revealed that sexting is so widespread as to be considered mundane. Girls as young as 13 send topless and naked photographs on their mobile phones without hesitation, regarding it as a form off flirtation." The research shows that teens do not think that they are doing something improper, and it means that we can't put them on the same level as adults. When teenagers know that parents find out everything about what they do, they won't send obscene photos and write obscene messages. If parents begin to monitor their children while they are still young, they won't meet any aggression from their children. Even though parents have a good relationship with their teens, they should always check what their children are doing.
To be the parents of a teenager is not easy. In different ways, parents should protect their children from any harm, even if it is by monitoring or spying. Adolescence is a difficult period of time in the lives of parents and children. They have to live through this time together. Only with co-operation and understanding each other can they go through all the difficulties of adolescence.

I agree with the article “Let Kids Run Wild Online” by Danah Boyd because it explains how parents shouldn’t be too protective of their kids while they're on the internet, but to let them have some freedom while their on the internet. Before technology had an uprising in our generation, the kids would run around freely and carelessly whether it be on their bikes, skateboards, roller skates, or just playing around in the jungle gym. They would always get a bruise or scar for being so careless and the parents would always get mad at the children for playing too roughly, so the parent would take them home and supervise them more carefully when they go out next time, instead of having the kid learn from his/her mistake. Parents shouldn’t helicopter over their children, but rather communicate with their children and let their children learn from their experiences.…

The article,”Let Kids Run Wild Online,” the author, Danah Boyd discusses the issue with overprotective parents who constantly restrict their child’s freedom, especially now with technology being the new field for kids in today’s century. Parent’s are quite often viewed as overprotective and desperate to be involved in their child's lives, however, this isn’t necessarily bad. Contrary to Boyd’s argument, children should not be allowed to “run wild online,” for their are many consequences and negative outcomes to this matter. Firstly, children, who are main focus of this Body’s prompt, aren’t at the appropriate age to understand the the dangers of online activities, or many don’t take it serious or into consideration. Secondly, parents aren’t…

There needs to be a level of trust that is developed between a child and their parents to receive honesty for a child in return. If a child does not feel like their parents trust them, they might feel the need to hide what they are doing, ruining the relationship between parents and their children. Many psychologists have found, however, that when parents know where their children are and what they are doing (and when the adolescent knows the parent knows, what psychologists call monitoring), adolescents are at a lower risk for a range of bad experiences, including drug, alcohol and tobacco use; sexual behavior and pregnancy; and delinquency and violence. The key, per psychologists, is to be inquisitive but not interfering, working to respect your child's privacy as you establish trust and closeness ("Communication- Helping Your Child Through Early Adolescence.", 2003). A child should be able to talk to their parents and feel open to tell them who they are conversing with over the internet or if they are being bullied. Most children are afraid to tell their parents because of what the consequence may be whether it is having to delete an account or getting their computer privileges taken away all…

One piece of evidence that supports that parents shouldn’t invade teen’s privacy was when Cobe said “Some will say that you should simply trust your children ,that if he is old enough to go on the internet he is old enough to know the dangers” (cobe 1) . Another reason is that parents sometimes worry too much of what their child is doing on the internet then worrying about how great their raising their child. That’s why I think they should just trust their child then try to spy on them .…

I agree with Coben about having parents spying on their teens’ because we as teens’ don't quite know about the dangerous in the internet. Parents just want their teens to be at any risk because in the article from “ Undercover Parent” says that meeting someone you don’t know or going into unknown websites can harm you because you can't be sure to trust it. Another reason for example, when it almost happened to me, I was almost in danger of certain things that could have happened to me for that reason is why my parents have all of my electronics on supervision. However, at the same time I disagree there are two reasons why I disagree. First ,we as teenagers that…

To speak on social networking and media, one must define it. The definition of social media is “the relationships that exist between network of people”. Technically speaking, Socialmedia.biz states, "Social Media are those forms of publishing that are based on a dynamic interaction, a conversation, between the author and active readers, in contrast with traditional broadcast media where the ‘audience’ is a passive ‘consumer’ of ‘content’”. This presents the fact that the audience is not necessarily specified, and the viewers are unintentional. Children and teenagers have became a large audience of social media. As technology has developed, teenagers have the internet at their fingertips. Social networking has given teenagers the advantages of learning, socializing and endless entertainment. Amanda Lenhart stated, “95% of all teens ages 12-17 are now online and 80% of those online teens are users of social media sites”. According to a study conducted by the National Institute on Media and Family, children spend more time sitting in front of electronic screens than doing any other activity besides sleeping. Kids’ excessive screen time comes with all kinds of hazards: like lack of physical activity, exposure to adult themes and content, and lack of interaction with family and peers. And then there are the ads—for almost every product imaginable, including alcohol and medications intended for adult use only. Ads also send strong messages about personal appearance and other topics to which children and teens are especially aware of. As years go by social networks keep growing, and prove to have many negative and positive influences on teenagers. And Social networking is not just Facebook and twitter, social media is any web based platform that enables people to interact. With the risks involved, the question is asked, should teenagers be limited in their use of social media?…

I have often times been ridiculed by my parents, grandparents and even strangers by my use of the internet. My parents will often times say I spend way to much time on the internet, my grandparents say that the internet has consumed my life, and some strangers will mumble that I’m not paying attention to surroundings when sitting in Starbucks or Panera on my laptop, phone or iPad. They aren’t wrong either. I do use the internet a lot, and I’m not ashamed to say that whatsoever. However, that is how the world works in all honesty.…

There are hazards that children may not be aware of when using the internet. For this reason, parents may download the software which will send them reports showing their children’s activity on the computer. For some parents this is not acceptable, but actually this is a good method of protection. Those parents who are concerned about their children’s security should actually verify children’s activity online too, because family is important. There are unsafe environments on the internet that kids may face, such as pedophiles and cyber bullies. Parents may not always be able to prevent children contact with them by explaining them the risks. Once a parent realizes that their kid is involved in a dangerous activity, then they can have a talk with their child about the dangers they are facing. Children deserve privacy, but parents should surrender their parental responsibilities and protect them against potential hazards without relying on others. There are such computer settings as parental blocks, but they don’t work well, because children know how to disable them. Another reason why a child should be spied is that everything your child posts on internet can be seen by everybody and this may affect child’s future. Children also can be affected by visiting pornographic sites. Coben says that it is not necessary to know every little thing children do on computer; all that parents have to know is what’s being said in e-mail and instant messages and in chat rooms. Spying on children is tough because parents many times find out unwanted activities their…
