Atticus Finch is a single father of two children, Jem and Scout. Atticus Finch isn't the same as the rest of the fathers. Atticus was a good role model to his children. Atticus Finch treated his children with care, estimate, and equality. He taught his children to be wise and have morals, as well as teaching them right against wrong. Atticus would try his best to do the best thing in order for his children to learn. Atticus told Scout, “You have to put yourself inside somebody’s skin and walk around in it before you can get to know them, and judge them.” Atticus tries to teach his children what's going on in world, and how people think and react in this world. He wants his children to learn how to get to know people instead of judging them. He teaches his children how to stay strong even when there are people trying to hit on you. But you need to know how to deal with them, and not let them hurt you! Also, he teaches them how they have to believe their opinion but not someone else's. For example, Scout doesn't understand that people don't have to fight to solve problems! However she's very reckless. But Atticus shows Scout how to get over what’s going on in life. Along with trying to let them see how other people are living, how their life is difficult, and how they deal with cases before even thinking of it. Besides, Jem wants to learn to be a real man, a strong man, a gentleman just like his father! Jem's personality is hiding his feeling, emotions and doesn't know how to bargain with them. Atticus teaches him how to be like a person that nobody knows what he's thinking, what’s going on inside his head and everyone wonders what’s his weak spot so they could disturbance him . However he wants him to not let these people can disturbance him, even if they're trying their best to disturbance him! When Atticus is talking to Jem about true hero he is making a comparison about him taking the Tom Robinson case. ” I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” When Atticus took the Tom Robinson case he knew he will lose it but he still takes it. Atticus isn't a strict father to his children. He treats them as adult but young children. Along with giving them the freedom of doing whatever they want and doing their own mistakes alone so they can learn from it later on after understating its wrong, by watching them and teaching them what’s right and wrong so they won’t repeat their mistake again. Even though back then in the 1930s parents sometimes beat their children but Atticus never did it with his children. That’s why Jem and Scout are very smart children for their ages. He also treats them all the same, that’s why he gives them the permission to call him Atticus or ' sir ' instead of father. Although Atticus may be busy from Scout and Jem for sometimes, but he still has a very strong relationship with them and he loves them very much as well. Back then in 1930s there was so many people that were racism. However Atticus wasn't one of them. Racism was a huge problem in Maycomb. Atticus taught Jem and Scout one of the most important lessons in life which is teaching them not to grow up to be like the rest people of Maycomb. “You know what’s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray that I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb’s usual disease.” He explains to them what racism was. “As you grow older you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.”. Atticus does his best to let his children choose the right way and understand what’s right. Altogether, Atticus is a great father! He raised his children very differently from other parents in Maycomb during the 1930s. His parenting style is even different from parents today. Thanks to Atticus is excellent parenting to his children. Scout and Jem grew up to be much acknowledged. They are both good people of Maycomb and they are not racist, unlike the rest of the people in Maycomb. Jem learned so many good lessons from his father and he followed in his father's job and became a lawyer and Scout became an author because she's very smart and she loves to read.
