Why is this important to partnership?
The World Health Organisation (WHO) best describes dementia as a condition effected by a disease of the brain. This causes multiple defects to everyday functions “including memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language and judgement” (WHO 2012). Empathy is a key component when developing a safe, trusting, therapeutic relationship between the nurse and patient. Patient-centered care will not be shown if empathy is lacking as nurses need to be able to understand the patient’s thoughts and perspective, creating trust to deliver a caring relationship as empathy has been described as a vital factor.
