Passionate About Sports
Everyone has something they are strongly passionate about, whether it’s music, art, dancing, or learning. But for someone to be passionate about something, there has to be a special event that took place in their lifetime, something that really moved them and opened their eyes to something real. This particular passion not only impacted myself, but also numerous people around me. I had not thought very hard about how much sports has actually impacted my life until a couple years ago, when my teacher asked me “What is your passion?” The first word that popped into my head was sports. She asked "Why"? What I thought was an obvious answer came to my mind, because I enjoy and love watching every sport. There is not much more for me to say on the matter, but thinking back to how simply I answered those two questions, I am now beginning to wonder why I am so passionate about sports. Growing up in Haiti, the only sport I enjoyed was soccer because it was mainly the only sport there. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. There was no goal post, real grass, or soccer equipment. Teams for the organized soccer in my town, were selected based on how good you were. Therefore, only the best players had uniforms, coaches, and competitive matches. Most of my friends and I weren't good enough to even try out for those teams, but that didn't stop us from playing soccer. Every single day, even when it was raining, we'd play with four or five people on a team. Practice was in a grassy field filled with dirt that was near my house or my backyard. We'd sometimes use two shoes for one goal post. We'd play until it was too dark to see, or until our parents called us home to shower and eat dinner. My friends and I learned a lot of important lessons. The first lesson we learned was that to have a game, you need other people. We also learned that it is important to negotiate and agree frequently. We'd negotiate over the interpretation of a rule,

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

Athletics has been an integral component of my entire life. While never being the most athletic or skilled, baseball was my passion growing up. The sport served as a garden for me to grow as a person, learn invaluable lessons, and gain friendships that will last a lifetime. After years of playing year-round, I was blessed to have the option of playing at a couple Small Division II schools or pursue a more academically rigorous degree at UVa. Ultimately, I chose the latter and it has been at the University of Virginia where CrossFit transformed from a supplementary regimen to my passion.…

From the day I could walk, I was involved in sports. From playing tee-ball in the backyard with my dad when I was three, to trying three new sports as a senior, athletics have been an integral part of my life. In my elementary school days, I tried every sport that was offered through the Jefferson Parks and Recreation. This included baseball, football, wrestling, karate, soccer, and tennis. Through middle school, I dropped several of these sports to focus on my two favorite sports, baseball and wrestling. Training for these two sports never ended and most of my time was spent either on a baseball field or on a wrestling mat. Entering my high school years, baseball and wrestling were the only sports I competed in. By my sophomore year, I was…

In a small, rural town called Arlington in Vermont, playing sports was a normal thing to do. It was nothing special it was just a way to waste time. There were only three sports you could play, soccer, basketball, and baseball. No football, hockey, etc. For me though, I loved the smell of the fresh grass when I was on the soccer field and the basketball courts. I loved when my parents watched me from the sideline and I could hear them cheering me on. It was just the best feeling to have. As I grew up in Vermont I never really knew how a big town or city felt like being in. I was in a school with only 400 kids in the whole high school! There was no loud traffic or packed mall, it was just farms and the pond. You had to make your own fun out of things. That’s why I loved to play sports.…

I had played soccer ever since I could remember however, as high school approached, I knew that I needed a change, so I decided to play field hockey. At first I was petrified; I had no idea what to expect from high school sports and on top of that I had no idea how to play field hockey. Therefore going into the first day of preseason, I focused on what I did know how to do: work hard. I ran as fast as I could and pushed myself beyond my limits and as a result, I made the varsity field hockey team as a freshmen. While this did mean a lot to me, what I believe is even more valuable are the important lessons that I have learned along the way.…
