Many authors that write rhetorical essays tend to have a common sentence structure throughout their thesis and conclusion. Dave Barry goes back and forth between a declarative, and an underlying declarative sentence structure. This gives him the dual advantage of not only stating actions that occurred, but he is also able to give these statements, and stories the ability to have an underlying tone in regards to how he truly feels about ‘patriotic advertisement’. If Barry had just came out in the first paragraph of his essay with how he did not approve of how advertisers have it wrong with what patriotism actually is, then this would be a very dull essay and not entertaining whatsoever. No one would want to read a author’s criticisms about ‘retail patriotism’, but quite a few more people would read an essay that talks about ‘beer’, and ‘patriotism’. In the first paragraph, he sarcastically states that he gets a warm proud feeling inside when he sees a Chrysler commercial that has the Bruce Springsteen want-to-be singing in the…
Within society power struggles are inevitable and in the business world it is no different. The letters of correspondence between an executive of the Coca-Cola Company, Ira C. Herbert and a representative of Grove Press, Richard Seaver express their different viewpoints on the use of Coca-Cola’s slogan “It’s the Real Thing”, in an advertisement promoting Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher by Jim Haskins. Both Herbert and Seaver attempt to out smart each other through their use of rhetorical techniques and strategies.…

Katherine Spriggs in the essay, “On Buying Local” uses effective argumentative skill to get her point across to her readers. Reading through her essay one of the first elements I noticed is she used phrases like “we should” and “everyone.” These statements shows that she is reaching out to everyone and anyone. Instead of using the phrase “people should,” she says “we should” which reaches out to the reader and makes them feel like they are apart of something great. Another way Spriggs grabs the reader's attention is with her personal example. While describing the effects of buying local, she writes about a family friend who is a farmer. Personal experiences shows the reader that the topic is a common thing and can affect people on a large scale.…
The author Crispin Sartwell introduces the topic by stating that wax statues of leaders were getting auctioned at DC. He talks about commenters and other professors who disagree on many common issues on which everyone was disagreeing. He says that the real hatred of the commenters can be seen when they talk about Donald Trump speech style. The commenters panic themselves about Trump tweets or un-prepared statements in public and at CIA headquarters; also argues that the president of United States can’t do so. The commenters consider Trump as being ‘mentally ill’ and as ‘narcissistic sociopath’.…

The concept of understanding persuasion was then applied to the documentary, Blackfish, and explored the filmmakers understanding of how the rhetorical appeals work in favor of a persuasive message. These analyses demonstrate how persuasion can be applied under a multitude of circumstances and how its elements are altered to apply to different situations and events. Although the motives of both of these artifacts was to persuade, it is the way in which the persuasion tactics were carried out that show how different messages require different tactics in order to successfully persuade. Persuasion can be used to exercise power over others thoughts and can even extend to altering their actions. Both works used their understanding of persuasion in efforts to expose, control, and instigate societal changes. These analyses have revealed that persuasion is not a simple matter of changing someone’s thoughts, but rather an extension to action in order to have a larger effect on the greater good of…
It was mainly using facts to persuade the audience in a logical manner. The whole video was just facts being spoken that were incorporated and used to further improve its ethos and pathos. The video used points presented in the book which the video was based on such as giving the statistic that “90% of goods are transported in huge container ships, 40% fly flags of conveniences” (morph 2013). The facts stated in the video were all the cons of offshoring, this was useful to persuade the audience but it decreases the videos logos because they only portrayed one side of the argument. An example of the type of statements is ”money, goods, waste, energy, and people all offshored to avoid laws, taxes, rules, regulations.” (morph,2013) this shows how corporations offshore a section of their business property in order to gain something by not having to meet certain standards a country may have. Logos was the rhetorical issue that the article focused the most on, although its logic were hindered by the fact that the author did not give information on where the research came from. In the article the author was discussing a sub-genre of offshoring and within the same sentence there was a link that took you to a different article that gave more information on that sub-genre. This type of strategy to support the authors facts were used throughout the article which raised its logic. Although the author did focus on…

However, her reasoning and justification regarding the evidence was more effective in conveying her thesis to her targeted audiences. One example was her personal experiences of her conversation with the call Center worker in Philippines. In the article, she wrote that “He was probably right. He is dispensable.” (Tufekci,2015) Here, she uses emotional appeal to invoke the empathy of the readers towards the worker, establishing a strong rhetorical appeal. Following which, she linked this statement back to her thesis and justify that machines can replace human labour, in this case the call centre workers.…
-This example violates the Universal standards of Relevance and Significance. Why is the director of auxiliary services considered credible when speaking on the production of the school’s merchandise? Why is their opinion relevant? What significance does this fact have in the ultimate goal of changing the factory? To correct the problem the speaker should have gotten information from an administrator who purchases the merchandise from the textile factory, or omitted this entire statement.…

“The Collapse of Big Media: The Young and the Restless” was written by David T. Z. Mindich was former assignment editor at CNN, has placed his roots back into the show era, and published in Spring of 2005 as an article in a magazine, Wilson Quarterly. Mindich’s article spoke about the decline of reading newspapers and watching the news and his reasons behind this conclusion. He used his article to inform and educated his audience. He claimed that if people become more informed about the world around them that they will be able to make better choices about who and what they vote for and therefore the people will have more control. Mindich shows that ethos, pathos; through his audience about the collapse of the newspaper and generation is losing interest in the news.…
