Black Sheep, Tillman’s platoon, had to make it to Mana on time. However, they had an inoperable vehicle with them that had to bring back to the FOB, forward operating base. Black Sheep could not abandon the vehicle. There only viable option was to bring it to a nearby paved highway for a wrecker to pick it up. Luckily, they came across a local who could tow it to the highway. However, they ran into an another problem. Whether to split the group or not; Either have the whole platoon escort the local to the highway, split the platoon and have one half escort the local while the other half continued on with the mission, or let the local tow it alone. Black Sheep’s leaders agreed that splitting the platoon would be inviting unnecessary danger and allowing the local to tow the vehicle alone was not even possible. However, the order came down from higher that the platoon would be split in order to stay on schedule. Black Sheep was split into two groups, Serial 1 and Serial 2. Serial 2 will escort the local while Serial 1 continues on with the mission.…

Richard Hickock and Perry Smith left a permanent mark on the town of Holcomb and on our nation as a whole with the heartless and grisly acts they committed in the early hours of November 15, 1959. There is never an excuse for someone to take the life of an innocent human being, but once it has happened, nothing seems to help the healing process more than understanding. By taking a look at Richard Hickock and Perry Smith’s early childhood, their upbringing and their adult lives and background, it provides a way to begin to understand. By connecting their lives and their actions to various communication principles and theories they displayed, it sheds light on a sobering situation and provides a new perspective into the events that transpired…
Leonard Peltier was convicted for the death of two federal bureau of investigation agents during a shootout on the pine ridge Indian reservation. Mr. Peltier served over 29 years in prison. This case happened on June 29, 1975 while two federal bureau of investigation agents in unmarked cars followed a red pick-up truck onto the jumping ball ranch believing it was a man accused of kidnap and armed assault. Peltier was there also because he was asked by people at pine ridge, South Dakota to support and protect the people being targeted for violence. The red pick-up truck really contained peltier and two other American Indian movement members. When shots were heard, families became alarmed of the agents and stood in fear. Shots were heard and a shoot -out erupted. According to records there were more than 40 native American gun fights, but only three AIM (American Indian movement) members Bob Rodideau, Darrell Butler, and Leonard Peltier were brought to trial.…
The South's predominant economic principle before the War of Northern Aggression was "Cotton is King." The South, as it was known around the turn of the 19th century, was solely dependent upon its cotton production. Low prices, unmarketable goods, and over-used land were driving the necessity for slavery and the need for cotton production out. Were it not for a Yankee's ingenuity, the South as we study it now may have been vastly different.…

At about 10:45 p. m. on October 3, 1974, Officers of the Memphis Police Department, Elton Hymon and Leslie Wright responded to a "prowler inside call" (FindLaw.com). After arriving at the scene, they saw a woman standing on her porch and motioning toward the house next door. She said that she had heard the sound of glass being shattered and that "they" or "someone" was breaking in the house next door. While Wright radioed the dispatcher saying they were at the scene, Hymon went behind the house. He heard a slamming door and saw someone running across the backyard. The fleeing suspect, Edward Garner, stopped at a 6-feet-high chain link fence ( Justia & Oyez & Forms WorkFlow ). Being able to see Garner 's face and hands, He saw no sign of a weapon and though not certain, was "reasonably sure" and "figured" that Garner was unarmed. Hymon thought Garner was near the age 17 or 18 and around 5 '5" to 5 '7" tall. While Garner crouched at the base of the fence, Hymon identified himself and issued a command to halt taking a few steps toward the suspect. Garner then attempted to climb the fence. Believing that if Garner made it over the fence he would escape capture, Hymon shot him. The bullet hit Garner in the back of the head. Garner was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he died on the operating table. Ten dollars and a purse taken from the house were found on his body (Biers).…
Throughout time, the ideas of democracy have changed with the help of many philosophers. Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu and Rousseau were four of the most important founders of the ideals of democracy. Through the Enlightenment Period, these thinkers began creating new ideas that would forever change the way governments are run through time. Our own American government reflects the ideas in some way or another of each of the philosophers we studied. Through new ideas, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Montesquieu all changed the way government was run with the innovative ideas they created.…

Christopher McCandless was destined to die as soon as he decided to enter the Alaskan wild unprepared. There were multiple reasons that prompted McCandless’ decision; however, if he had planned more and obtained the necessary materials to survive in the wilderness, he could very well still be alive today. Chris made a lot of careless errors on his adventure, and these mistakes foreshadowed an inevitable death that he came to peace with as he said his goodbyes to the people he loved and met along the way.…
In all of these cases, the public has had widely different opinions of how to treat the military involved in the incidents. For Lieutenant Calley and those involved in My Lai, many in the public viewed the actions of Charlie Company as understandable because of the nature of the war in 1969 – everyone seemed to be the enemy, and the “search and destroy” missions of that time were based upon intelligence that indicated the enemy was using hamlets such as My Lai for refuge. As a result, the punishment for all of those involved in My Lai was very light or not at all; Lieutenant Calley was the only one convicted but he only served three days in prison and was pardoned by President Nixon after serving three and a half years on “house arrest.” For the recent cases in Iraq, the reaction has been mixed in the public, from widespread support for the Marine in Fallujah and the reservists who “scrounged” the vehicle, to disgust at the Abu Ghraib cases and…

In the speech “Informing Ourselves to Death” given by Neil Postman, he talks about the danger of computer technology that people are not aware of. Firstly, the speaker gives explanation of two characteristics of new technologies, including computer technology. One that he claims is that every technology has both positive and negative impacts on people, and “sometimes, it [a new technology] destroys more than it creates” (Postman 1). The other is that a new technology makes difference between those who make use of and those who do not take any advantage from, which he describes as “winners” and “losers” (Postman 1). According to the speech, new technology will not always work as people believe it to do, and sometimes, no one can predict the…
