The focus of the movie was to objectively look upon personality, more so at extravert and introvert personalities; patch being a very extravert, to his surrounding fellow doctoral students and professors who are severely introverted. With this in mind, it has a very uplifting message and that is no matter what happens in your life, do not let it discourage you or lead you away from who you are and what you love. Also with personality, Patch believed that medicine alone could not always help, so instead of treating the illness, you need to treat the patient, and with the use of laughter he treated the persons soul as well as their ailments.
Patch exhibits 4 of the 5 super ordinate factors of the Big 5 model. He has Extraversion,
openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. With the Extraversion he has the following facets: warmth, gregariousness, assertiveness, activity, excitement seeking, and positive emotion. With the openness to experience he has the following 6 facets: fantasy, aesthetics, feelings, actions, ideas and values. With the agreeableness he only has five of the six facets: trust, straightforwardness, altruism, modesty and tender mindedness. With Conscientiousness he posses the following facets: achievement striving, competence, and deliberation. His personality would be described as a unique, competent, intelligent, warm goofball, who seeks positive emotion from others and gives it back three fold. His values are top notch, while he is also very modest.
Therapy according to patch would be to treat the person's soul, as well as their sickness or ailments. Not only would it be a fun place to be, it would be a place where people could feel good about getting better, or make peace with dying. Those people would have the support of others and they would come out as better people. The doctor would order the following for every patient: 100cc of laughter, 200cc of compassion, 50cc of good heartedness, and another 200cc of understanding.
I think that Patches view on life was partially shaped by his stint in the mental hospital. One major reason for this would be especially for the time, people who were institutionalized were not treated very well, and by him seeing this first hand, probably gave him the push he needed to find a better way to help people.
If I were teaching this class I would definitely show this film. A few reasons for this is that since this is a personality class, it is nice to see a film in which people's personalities are so different and distinct. This forces the student to look in what ways the people are different, and to categorize which super ordinate and subordinate factors the person possess, to form their personality. I also thought that this movie was very refreshing and gave a more positive look upon personality, and since our book focus on mostly theorists who viewed abnormal patients, a film that covers both abnormal, and normal patients was nice. All in all I thought this was a great movie and an awesome movie to show in this class.
