Pathos In Julius Caesar
Line act 3 scenes 2 of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, the character Mark Antony delivers to the Roman people a speech that employs a appeal to pathos and diction to show that Caesar was wrongfully killed, and uses metaphor in order to show how the stab wounds of Caesar spoke in pain and treason. Mark Antony uses pathos in his speech by saying “that when the people cried, Caesar also cried.” Mark Antony uses that line to show the people of Rome that he was ambitious and wasn’t a bad ruler. Mark Antony also reminds the Roman crowd that “... They once loved Caesar.” Showing that before the honorable men killed him he wasn’t hated by the majority of the Roman people. Mark Antony also says that “they once loved Caesar as Caesar loved them.”

Antony understood the audience very well and knew they would consider any other viewpoint on any topic. He realized that using his emotions would be the most beneficial way to persuade. He was able to use ethos by stating how Caesar was not too ambitious to have his life taken away from him (III,ii,94-99). Antony used pathos by having a visual, emotional impact on the people. He lifted up his cloak, showing the wounds, and telling where each conspirator had the power and the evil motivation to kill this worthy man…

In the play, he was best friends with Caesar-well, until he killed him. However, in real life, Brutus hated Caesar. He was never supportive of Caesar, and truthfully never loved him.(Musaj and Prezi Inc.) In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, he uses Brutus’s strong love of Rome, his honor, and his willing to do anything for the good of Rome to show that Brutus is the tragic hero.…

To be able to correctly utilize pathos, you should use rich metaphors, match your vocal delivery to the emotion, tell stories, use descriptive words, and use sensory words. “ If then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: not that I loved Caesar less but that I loved Rome more.”(3.2.21-24) Brutus is directly appealing to the plebeians’ morals, more importantly their sense of patriotism. You can clearly see that Brutus wanted to address each plebeians’ love for their city. You can clearly see that each plebeian cares deeply about their city because then they wouldn’t be at Caesar’s funeral trying to figure how their emperor died. Brutus is also attempting to receive empathy from the plebeians , basically saying that he didn't kill Caesar because he was jealous or utterly dislike of Caesar but because he was concerned more about Rome’s future. His main objective with this statement was to make the plebeians feel loved so they wouldn’t be angered with him and understand his side of the…

Later on in Antony’s eulogy, he holds Caesar’s will in his hand, and the mob demands to hear it. Although Antony refuses to read what is in the will, he still does so by telling them that “hearing the will of Caesar/ It will inflame you, it will make you mad/ ‘Tis good you know not that you are his heirs” (III, ii, 145-148). This is an example of pathos because Antony is purposely telling them what is in Caesar’s will. By doing so, he is manipulating the audience by appealing to the feeling of anger. Antony takes a moment to pause, and says “bear with me; my heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause till it come back to me” (III, ii, 108-109). Antony is purposely breaking down and taking a moment to pause so that the crowd will show him sympathy. This will also make the crowd feel guilty about betraying Caesar. The feeling of guilt and betrayal against Caesar will make them turn their heads against…

Their plot is successful and Caesar is murdered in the Capitol while his right-hand man, Mark Antony, flees. Antony returns and asks the conspirators if he can speak to the public about Caesar’s death. Brutus grants Antony’s request, but on the requirement that Brutus gives a speech first. Brutus uses Ethos to make the Romans believe he’s one of them, Logos to give reason for killing Caesar, and Pathos to show he did love Caesar. Meanwhile Antony uses Ethos the same as Brutus, to convince the people he’s one of them, Logos to show Caesar wasn't ambitious, and Pathos to portray his true liking for Caesar.…
