Pathos In The Short Story Reunion
The short story “Reunion” describes the last meeting between a son and his father. It incorporates humor, pathos, and grotesque in a blend that leaves readers unsure of the character of the father, and whether or not the boy is better off with or without him. The story begins when the father and son, Charlie, meet, 3 years after Charlie’s parents had divorced. Here, the author uses pathos—describing Charlie’s excitement and pleasure being both with his father and related to him. He describes sniffing his father “the way [his] mother sniffs a rose”, referencing his mother early on and hinting that she is his only true guardian. The author then appeals to emotions by repeating the same idea—wanting “some record of [them] having been together”—3

Reunion by John Cheever is a short story about a son and a father who had not seen one another for 3 years after his mother divorced him. The son looked back to the day where the reunion took place. At the beginning of the story , readers can see the son’s glad feeling with his opportunity meeting his father and his high expectation of his long-time-no-see father. The reference the son had to his father at the beginning is the image of a noble, rich, marcho businessman with graceful appearance that bring the child to think that he “would be something like him” and would take him as his role model. Besides the positive, proud images and expectations of the son about his father can be shown by some expression “my flesh and blood”, “he was a big, good-looking man”. However, as the story go on, the reference to his father are also gradually changing through father’s character during short time they went through together. The father kept making impression to his son in the wrong way by making himself as an excellent and superior one .For examples, he talked in Italian to waiters in one retaurant intending to show his education level , shouting some impolite words “Master of the hounds!” and “Tallyhoo” ,which is a word used by huntsmen when spotting a fox, in order to disdain and make a joke to waiters’ pink jacket uniform. The image of his father turned out to be so boisterous, snobbish, drunk and impolite that his son could not pay respect and admire to him anymore .The reunion that he wished it would be a great memory to be captured as a nice photo just continued to be fading from his mind. The son’s voice that readers hardly hear until at the end of the story ,when he was about to leave him and get on the train, can imply the son’s feeeling and what he want to express to his father after he see through him especially the last sentence before their departure “Goodbye, Daddy”…

In Carver’s another story “A small, good thing”, reflects the importance of reconciliation is related to a family. The narratives can be dramatically different among family members under the same roof. The core notion of reconciliation, according to Susan Dwyer, “is that of bringing apparently incompatible descriptions of events into narrative equilibrium.” Reconciliation is the act of bringing back harmony to the endangered relationships, accepting the coexistence, and pushing the family to carry on with mutual understanding. This essay proposes several questions while exploring the reconciliation theme inside a family dwelling. From Hanif Kureishi’s story “My Son the Fanatic”, Raymond Carver’s story “Elephant” and his another story “A small, good thing”, those stories give examples to illustrate the points below. Why reconciliation is needed? What is the basis of reconciliation? What…

John Cheever’s “Reunion” is solely a recall of one of his own memories mainly about a reunion with his father, but the article has a more subtle implication psychologically when it comes to a relationship between a prolonged absent father and an innocent son, who was so looking forward to meeting his father and expected a change in him. By describing a bizarre experience with his father, Cheever challenges us to ruminate on whether we can accept our families for being who they really are. Every reader’s own judgment to this question differs with their own personal experiences with their family. I myself felt really sorry for the author when I was reading his experience.…

One of the common themes throughout the story is the strong, irrefutable relationship between father and son. In powder, the boy is very different from his father however, he still looks up to him and respects his way of living life. in powder, there is an unquestionable relationship that is quite different from most. In thisfather-son relationship we see a reflection of many modern day “broken home” situations. The ordinary role of father and son has been reversed in this story. Lost boys

The short story “Lost boys” is about a couple and their relationship to the narrator’s mother-in-law, Lily. The story starts in “in-medias-res”, which I can see because the reader is thrown straight into the story without any introduction. Lily’s son, Ewan, believes that Lily is an untrustworthy and abnormal mother, but the narrator doesn’t agree in that. Although Ewan has told a lot of bad things about his mother, the narrator believes that her mother-in-law, Lily, is a romantic and good woman. Ewan thinks he had a deprived childhood because he doesn’t feel that Lily took care of him. The narrator changes her view of Lily when she was in Hampstead Heath to visit Lily with her children. The narrator went out for a swim while Lily looked after the children, but when the narrator went back, Alex was gone. Then the narrator remembered when her husband told her about his childhood; “We’d rented a cottage in the New Forest and a lot of the grown-ups went swimming, naked, in a river. Afterwards she sat down and painted the others and I wandered off. She forgot me. I was only five. I wandered down the stream and fell in and nearly drowned... All for the painting.” (Side 34 – line 31). Then the narrator realised that it was exactly the same that happened to Alex and that Ewan was right. Lily is a selfish woman who doesn’t think of anything else than her paintings and that’s the reason why she forgets Alex and Ewan. The narrator never told Ewan about what happened that day.…

Everyone has some special memories, like Larry Watson, in his essay “Silence,” reveals “all of us grieve, at some time in our lives, for our lost childhood, but in the sameness of all the days of past only the usual day, the day different from all the other days, is likely to stand out in memory. And for me, the day my father stole me is the day I remember best” (P111). It makes me recall the day I had unforgettable experiences that produced a profound impression on me. The special day I went through told me that love always exists. As well, after reading Larry Watson’s article “Silence,” I found the true love between the father and the son, even though the father left the blank impression on the son’s childhood because…
