In the event of a disaster, health professionals have a mandate to respond to the health needs of the people swiftly. The disaster medicine and public health preparedness, DMPHP, provide core competencies that guide health professionals' response to an emergency. In the aftermath of an emergency, the first thing a healthcare worker needs to do is detect the needs of the people, immediately notify the relevant authorities before taking action. Afterwards, the health professional can reassure the people by communicating his qualifications and offering to guide those affected through a safety drill. The measures adopted should not put either party in danger, but instead, promote their safety (James et al., 2010). Therefore, the measures adopted should be within the guiding ethical and health principles governing the healthcare profession.
In achieving an effective coordination, the manager should show proficiencies in communication, incident management, assessment, and intervention within the laws and ethics stipulated by the public health system (Ready, 2017). The manager should detect and communicate with the hospital staff about emergency cases by understanding the nature of the crisis and selecting a response team relevant to handle the situation. In addition, emergency managers should have a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, ethnic, or religious views of those affected in order to properly guide the response team during recovery (Osha, 2017). It is also the manager’s duty to deploy the right staff swiftly, promptly mobilize resources to the emergency location, and provide space to adequately deal with those affected. In doing so, the manager must promote the safety of both the medics and the patients during the response.
