Nursing theories gives directions and guidance for structuring nursing practice and also these theories are the part of nursing education and research. Many of the nursing theories are based on the concept of caring. Watsons Human caring theory one of the well-known caring theory.
The institution I work for uses the caring model which is based on the human caring theory of Jean Watson. “Transpersonal Caring Relationship” is the foundation of her theory. Watson based her theory on ten creative factors. They are 1, Formation of a humanistic-altruistic system of values 2, the instillation of faith and hope 3, “The cultivation of sensitivity to one’s self and to others” 4, “Development of a helping trust relationship” 5, “the promotion and acceptance of the expression of positive and negative feelings”.6, “The systematic use of the scientific problem solving method for decision making” 7, “The promotion of transpersonal teaching-learning” 8, “The provision of supportive, protective, and corrective mental, physical, societal, and spiritual environment” 9, “The assistance with gratification of human needs” 10, “The allowance for existential-phenomenological forces”. The main conceptual elements of the theory are caring factors, transpersonal caring relationship and caring moment (Alligood & Tomey, 2010).
The concept I choose for this assignment from our professional practice model is “patient satisfaction”. Our hospital’s goal is to provide care above and beyond the expectation level of the patients. Every departments in our hospital work hard to meet the expectations of our customer. Loving and compassionate care is an important factor in achieving patient satisfaction.
