Service delivery to the transgendered community is generally reported to be poor with hospital and healthcare workers demonstrating prejudicial attitudes once the birth assigned sex of the individual is discovered (OHRC, 2012). The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) frequently report on human rights violations against sexual minorities, including transgendered people. For instance, in June 1998 their newsletter reported the failure of ambulance personnel to assist a transvestite, Marcela, who had been stabbed and was left bleeding in the street for two hours until she died (OHRC, 2012). In social work practice, I find that it is essential that workers support transgendered people in their difficulties accessing shelters and other social service agencies and to coach them on how to maneuver the system so that they can meet their…
Based on what you observed in the film or read in the book; clearly articulate and delineate at least three of the sociopolitical factors that influenced public health policy development for HIV/AIDs prevention and control in the United States. Then discuss separately each of the three sociopolitical factors each factor and discussion is equal to three points each. The three sociopolitical factors that influenced public health policy development for HIV/Aids prevention and control in the United States were identifying early possible ways of spreading the disease, how it affected our blood supply and that to acknowledge the social implications that it could be everyman’s disease.…

The LGBTQ community has developed and changed over the years, gradually becoming more inclusive of all types of sexual and gender identities. It brings a sense of belonging to a group of people and gives many that land in the span of the LGBTQ spectrum places that they know they can go to where they will be accepted. However the community that queer people have built around them and the acceptance of the diversity and complexity of how people identify themselves does not always transfer into other aspects of life. The LGBTQ spectrum is ever changing adding new identities all the time, however they are not always readily accepted by all. Gender and sexual fluidity being among the ones that have had to face their battles to have basic rights…
Same sex partners may not have declared their status, with the consequence that professionals may exclude them from involvement in their partner’s care;…
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community has faced discrimination throughout history, 2015 is no exception. LGBT people are being denied their unalienable rights, one of these rights is marriage.…
In general, many counselor trainees might be unfamiliar with the distinction of these above-mentioned titles. An affection and/or orientation to a person of the same sex is referred to as homosexuality (Sue and Sue, 2003). Commonly, males are known as gay, females are known as lesbians. Individuals who self-identify themselves as homosexual or as heterosexual and move back and forth between the groups are self labeled as bisexuals (Matthews, 2001). Transgender individuals consist of transsexuals, individuals undergoing hormone treatment, and others who elect surgery (Sue and Sue, 2003). In most of my readings and research on counseling diverse populations, I find that bisexual and transgender issues have been omitted or lightly touched upon.…
For years gay and lesbian organizations have always had a hard fight for equal rights in the United States, Texas is without an exception. Recent law amendments to the state constitution have upturned the “Anti-sodomy statute, Chapter 21, Sec. 21.06 of the Texas Penal Code made it Class C misdemeanor to engage in deviant sexual intercourse with the same sex” and brought the State back in line with the Supreme Court Ruling equal rights for everyone. The current problem now facing Texas is about repealing the outdated state amendments and Texas Health Code to reflect the changes and helping government employees stay informed of those changes.…
In health and social care settings there are policies and procedures that promote inclusive practice and challenge discrimination, they promote rights, empower individuals and remove any barriers restricting them. Individual’s differences should be valued and celebrated.…
The Department of Health, 2008, cites recognition that same sex relationships and their dependent children receive the same entitlements and access to quality healthcare as heterosexual couples and their dependent children. In an era where same sex couples are recognised and marriage equality is rife, the same should be said for healthcare equality. It is a given that patients from varying cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds are provided equal care regardless of the views, beliefs or prejudices of the healthcare professional, same sex relationships should also be awarded the…
There are also patients who require care provided by same sex person. Then the Trust must provide option that the patient request is respected.…
Developing a plan to help meet the health care needs of transgender individuals could most likely be implemented in 5 years. The short-term goal would be to provide continuous education to all staff members regarding the specific care needs of transgender individuals and using proper terminology. This goal could be implemented in a time frame of 6-12 months. Organizations could provide educational material upon hire, as well as on a yearly basis for a refresher. Another short- term goal would be to offer “all-gender” restrooms, this goal could be implemented in 1-3 years to fully switch all facilities to have the same option.…
In our day and age, being of a sexual orientation other than heterosexual is somewhat common. Though it is definitely not considered a norm, it is more accepted in most parts of the world. A few years ago, people who were not heterosexual had to hide who they really were in order to be accepted by society. Because of this norm, one automatically assumes they are straight whether it comes to themselves or others. So how do homosexual/asexual people become conscious of their sexual orientation?…
There are approximately nine million people in America that represent the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. That represents 3.5% of the American population, with that number expected to rise as new legislation makes it safer and more acceptable for the LGBT community to identify themselves (Williams Institute, 2011). The purpose of this paper is to discuss current legislation in the Federal government pertaining to LGBT rights, as well as cover the history of LGBT legislation. The American Government has come a long way with gay rights, but there is still…
