The first shots heard there were known as “the shots heard round the world” which kickstarted The Revolution. This was the battle of Lexington and Concord which the Patriots won. The British won at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. The Second Continental Congress met, wrote, and signed the Declaration of Independence on July 2nd, 1776, but the war raged on. In the winter of 1776, The Patriots won at the Battle of Trenton, and it is also known as ¨Washington crosses the Delaware.¨ In 1777 the Patriots won The Battle of Saratoga and it was a major turning point in the war for them. After many battles and years of fighting, the Patriots won in October, 1781 (Lennon) (digitalhistory). Patrick Henry had an important role in The American Revolution. His father was originally from Scotland. Henry was the second oldest out of nine children, so he was educated by his father and uncle. He was very musical, and played the fiddle and the flute. At 15, he ran a store with his father. The store was not a success and it went out of business. Patrick Henry married in 1754, to a woman named Sarah Shelton. They had 6 children and owned a farmhouse together. Henry tried for three years to grow tobacco on his farm, but it failed. The house burned down in a fire. He managed a tavern while he was studying law, and secured his law license in 1760. Patrick Henrys misfortunes as a child and young adult helped prepare him for adulthood as an orator.
