Captain Strong has several patrol officers that are dissatisfied with their jobs. They are feeling overwhelmed by the excessive workload, they are unable to complete their preliminary investigations and often have to cut corners on their shift. They are rarely allowing to socialize with other officers because they patrol alone and are not allowing to take a lunch break with more than one officer at one specific location (More, Chapter 6, 2012). They are having difficulty feeling like they are making a difference with their role in the police department. Captain Strong has several options of approaches on how to address these issues. It is imperative to the success of any police department to ensure their officers are motivated by the work they do. This motivation ensures they duties are performed appropriately, which helps to establish trust within the community.…

American law enforcement organizations is hierarchal and it is a bureaucratic structure adopting ways of the military. The quasi-military structure found in police departments will emphasize the importance of specializations in task, duties, objectives, and responsibilities. Each level in the chain of command has specific authority and tasks to carry out. Historically speaking, Peel’s principles of a professional police organization can be seen in today’s philosophy of community-oriented policing (COP). Peel’s principles emphasized the following guidelines for a professional police organization: (1) a police mission statement and core values; (2) crime prevention; (3) respect or citizenry; (4) respect for the law; (5) minimizing the use of…
Throughout Hitler’s reign over Germany there was an agenda that existed which led to murders of a great number of innocent people. The agenda was the extermination of Jews from Germany so that Germany could become a pure country in terms of ethnicity. It was Hitler’s idea but he only gave the orders while the SS and the Order Police carried out the orders. One group of people that helped carry out this idea of judenfrei or Jew free Germany was the Reserve Police Battalion 101. The men who made up this group were regular men that had come from a variety of careers. Most the men volunteered because the immunity that they would receive from “conscription into the army” once the volunteers had become part of the Order Police. The Reserve Police Battalion 101 played a crucial role in helping Germany get rid of a lot of Jews, which resulted in “a group of normal middle-aged German men” becoming mass murders. “But how did these men first become mass murders” and most importantly what motivated the men to commit the mass murder? There are three major motivations that led the Reserve Police Battalion 101 to commit the mass murders: following orders from their leaders, conformity, and the propaganda that was being used by the Nazi Regime.…

The philosophical approach that Captain Strong should take to carry out the project would be to find what is causing the problem with the workers and change those problems to accommodate everyone’s needs. According to almost all of the patrol officers “their workload is excessive and complains that all they do is go from one incident to the next and spend an inordinate amount of time creating police reports” (More, Vito, & Walsh, 2012). To decrease the patrol officer’s workload Captain Strong can approve of overtime for the officers to get his r work done. Also, some off-duty police officers can come in during the day or night and work together with the patrol officers to get the paperwork’s taken carried off. By doing this Captain Strong is easing up on the workload of the patrol officers as well as encouraging the patrol officers meet new people officers and develop new friendship help raise morale’s. It was also stated that patrol officers “response time is long” (More, Vito, & Walsh, 2012). When a call is made to the dispatcher, the person who is calling would expect the police officer to arrive within a reasonable time frame if not earlier. However, when there is a long response time the person, the community would feel as if he or she is not being taken seriously and would take matter into his or her or hands. It was also stated that the…
Law enforcement in the United States have three levels of law enforcement that are local, state, and federal who have tasks every day , but their functions are somewhat distinct. Their main purpose of their daily objective is to serve and protect all citizens from any harm, and they also enforce all laws to people violating them as well. Because each agency has their distinct aspects in their work, this paper will provide a detailed summary of the local, state, and federal law enforcement, and a summary of possible future changes in laws and the impact these changes will have on policing.…
COMPSTAT enforces that command staff hold the responsibility of crime prevention and reduction with little regard for patrolling officers in the decision making process. While traditional policing or patrolling entrusts decision making based on the street activity. This type of policing is a partnership between law enforcement and citizens. The crossroads is evident as the two different approaches clash. The technology approach favors the command officer‘s decisions, while traditional patrolling favors the leadership and decision making of officers on their individual patrols. (Willis, Mastrofski, & Weisburd 2003,…
What would happen if a riot broke out right outside of a school? What if one of those students were taken hostage by an armed gunman? If those situations ever occurred, then we would need someone, or even a group of people, to take care of those life-threatening occurrences. That is the reason police stations have trained and hired SWAT team members. The career of a SWAT team member is to tackle highly dangerous problems like hostage situations, search and rescue operations, riots, and much more. This profession is important to society because are trained for the high-risk situations that regular police officers aren't trained for, and can effectively resolve dangerous situations, helping the public remain safe.…
There are many differences between the police and the military. Although, they are similar in some ways they are also different. One of the differences between them is that the police serve a citizen population rather than fight for a foreign country (pg., 95). Also the police provide services to help people and are requested by individual citizens. Another thing is they are constrained by laws protecting the rights of citizens. Lastly, they exercise individual discretion while the military personnel are trained and expected to operate as members of military units (pg., 95). I think that the quasi-military organizational style creates issues in law enforcement because it encourages “war on crime” which is a problem in the world today. Also…
