POW 3: Checkerboard Squares

Teacher Assessment
Scaled Score
1) Introduction: A good Introduction should restate the situation and specific task in your own words. DO NOT plagiarize!

Your introduction section should be written such that someone unfamiliar with the POW could read through your introduction, understand the problem, and work out the POW without reading your process section.

/ 4 / 20
2) Process: A good Process should clearly describe all methods that you tried in detail. If a method was unsuccessful, what did you learn from it and how did it shape your next approach to the problem? This section of your paper should outline your methods tried from the start of this problem to the end, whether or not you were able to find a solution. If you received assistance, describe how it helped (or didn’t help) you and what ideas or methods resulted from this assistance.

Your process section should be written such that someone unfamiliar with the POW could read through your steps, follow them precisely, and get the exact same answer as you.

/ 4 / 40
3) Attached Work: Attach all work you and your group members used to try and solve the POW.

/ 4 / 15
4) Solution: A good Solution should clearly state the total number of squares of various sizes on an 8-by-8 checkerboard.

Your solution should also generalize the results – that is, can you come up with a formula that would give the total number of squares of various sizes for a square checkerboard of any size (e.g. 4-by-4, 5-by-5, etc)?

In this section, you should prove why your solutions are correct. A solution section without explanation and justification of each answer will not receive full credit.

/ 4 / 25
Extra Credit: How many squares are there altogether, on any-sized checkerboard, when you put together m checkerboards that are each of the size m x m? For example, instead of calculating the total number of squares on one 4  4 checkerboard square, calculate the total number of squares on four 4  4 checkerboard squares. Calculate the total number of squares on five 5 x 5 checkerboard squares. Calculate the total number of squares on six 6  6 checkerboard squares and so on. Is there a pattern to this calculation? If there is a pattern, what rule describes this pattern? Explain/Justify your answer.

All that this Problem of the Week is about is formulas for finding area of a shape on a geometry board depending on the number of boundary pegs (pegs that make the perimeter of the shape) and inside pegs (any pegs inside the shape). The main, and pretty much only goal was to find different formulas to figure out the area of a shape with certain characteristics. The characteristics were depending on the number of outside pegs, the number of inside pegs, and both of them together. I came up with many formulas for many different characteristics of the shape(s).…

Checkerboard SquaresProblem Statement: Suppose you have a square checkerboard of some size other than an 8 by 8. How can you determine how many squares are on it altogether. You will know you are done when no matter what size checkerboard you are given, you can give a clear procedure for easily computing the total number of squares.Process: To solve this problem, you would first have to make or find a square (example=6by6). Then you would have to find how many total squares are found in this big square. To do this we need to find an equation, we can do this by using math and the knowledge of knowing the square is 6 by 6. To do this you could multiply 6 by 6 and you get the answer. There are multiple answers/solutions…
