An ecosystem is a complex set of relationships among the living resources, habitats, and residents of an area. Which includes plants, trees, animals, fish, birds, microorganisms, water, soil, and people ( ). The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, in laurel, Md encompasses a type of ecosystem, which makes it a unique environment t visit. The Patuxent Wildlife ecosystem contains many plants, wildlife, and lakes. In this essay I will discuss the structural and functional dynamics of the Patuxents Wildlife Research Center ecosystem of Lake Allen at North
Tract, and how humans have affected this ecosystem by interacting with its biogeochemical cycles. It will also relay how the knowledge of the ecosystem’s structure and function can assist in the development of plans for its management and restoration of the ecosystem.
The major structural and functional dynamics (processes) of the ecosystem including change over time. The Lake Allen is of an earthen construction. Its foundation is of soil; originally it was completed in 1947 with its structure being modified in 2002. It is 11 feet in height with a length of 410 feet.
How humans may have affected biogeochemical cycles in that ecosystem, including impacts to the nitrogen, phosphorus, or carbon cycle. According to Ronald Eisler, article “Lead Hazards to fish, wildlife, and invertebrates”. The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center believes that the natural resources were affected by environmental PB contamination, with some wildlife species numbers being reduced as a result. This Pb is known as lead and its compound has being known to man for about 7,000 years with PB poisoning occurring for at least 2,500 years. Evidence has proven that Pb is neither essential nor beneficial to living organisms, and that the measured effects are adverse which include those on survival, growth, reproduction, development, behavior, learning, and metabolism. In adverse effects on what we call aquatic biota has reported a waterborne Pb concentration of 1.9
How knowledge about that ecosystem’s structure and function can help or has helped to develop plans for its management and restoration.
The implication of species interactions in ecosystem management and restoration.
