Q1. I believe that I relate the most to the narrator Paul Bäumer throughout the story. I chose Paul because we do share things in common, but because he is the narrator we are able to know and learn the most about him. With Paul narrating everything that happens, we are able to experience the events and his feelings towards them. As a reader, it allows us to feel what he feels, we are able to get to know him the best. Therefore, I feel that I am able to relate and see myself being most like Paul Bäumer.
First, I find it easy to relate to Paul because he is just your regular teenage boy. He grew up with his family in his small childhood home. He went to school everyday and had friends. Of course all of the other characters have their own homes and families as well. I just find it easier to see myself as Paul because he is so young and he was so full of life before the war. I think that we both share the same hopes and dreams for a peaceful world. I cannot begin to compare what today's society it to what it was like in World War I. Obviously World War I was so much worse then
Paul seems to have a huge weak spot in his heart for his family, especially his mother. Like Paul, I share a very strong love and bond with my family. My family means everything to me, they are the most important thing in my life. I feel that Paul feels this way too, his family and war friends are basically the only things he has left in his life. Paul and I both cherish our families. Although, unlike Paul, I have never had to leave my family to protect my country, I can only imagine how it made him realize how important they are to him. Another example, I share a very strong connection with my mother. Like Paul's mother, my mother does everything for me. She makes sure all of my needs are met even when she isn't feeling well or is having a bad day. Mine and Paul's mother share and unconditional love towards
