She reminds me of a tiger, in that the tiger is described as having a breathless amount of patience when stalking its prey and always waits until its prey is in the most vulnerable position. This trait is shown in her skill to play cards. In each game that she played she would start with a dollar and end up with a dollar. The coincidence of her luck and the…
This scared Paul and made him want to get more money. He could no longer hear from the rocking horse. This made him ride it faster and longer. In the end Paul died trying to quiet the whispers in the house.…
Throughout this story it is apparent Paul does not wish to slowly progress into perfection instead, Paul wants to experience instant gratification and while doing so Paul wants to move his way to the top and remain at the top. One down fall for Paul is that his method of personal achievement is attempted by being deceitful, telling lies to everyone that surrounds him including his teachers, his elders, and his father. Paul had the struggle of being successful yet, because of his hast, Paul was about to fail. In doing so, “he stood watching the approaching locomotive, his teeth chattering, his lips drawn away from them in a frightened smile; once or twice he glanced nervously sidewise, as though he were being watched.” (65). Paul appeared to think this was a time when he would be remember, that he would finally achieve what he was looking for, stardom, people would remember him and Paul ended his own life.…

He takes it upon himself to fix his parents financial situation. Their situation is brought about to help their parents, it seems, but the boy decides not to tell his mother about this gift he has to know about the horse that is going to win. The people around him are amazed that this is how he is getting so good. They earn a lot of money, but they give it to him to give to his mother, to improve the situation they are put in. Lawrence takes an almost eerie side to this story when the little boy dies. It seems that the house killed the boy for he was too much into the fact that he could sense things through the house, and took advantage of it. In Rocking Horse Winner by D. H. Lawrence, there are many people he or she can blame for Paul’s death, his mom, his uncle…
Throughout the story of “The Lottery”, author Shirley Jackson uses an ironic tone. From the reader point of view, a lottery is special grand prize, not a twisted turn of events which involves death. The use of irony prepares the readers for the most dramatic reaction.…
Every now and then a special bond occurs between a father and a daughter. It all began when my dad saw a Christmas promotion in the newspaper stating that Lowes home improvement store was giving away "Dusty" the pony on Christmas Eve, no purchase necessary. Dad was only 9 years old, but he got my grandmother to drop him off at Lowes the morning of the drawing. "And the winner of Dusty the pony is . . . Andrew Waites (my dad)!” Dad then got a job at a Tennessee Walking Horse stable where the owner agreed to board and feed Dusty in exchange for my dad’s working at the barn after school. Two years later, the owner took my dad to the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. It was then that my dad saw Reves Little Boy crowned World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Pony. My dad told himself that if he could ever afford a "real" walking horse, he would want it to be just like Reves Little Boy and win the Pony World Grand Championship.…
This story was the only work for which Shirley Jackson is known for among her two known published works. Nonetheless, this short piece is known only for the pessimistic criticism of the wilderness and cruelty of her imagination and visions in that era. Jackson’s insights and observations about man and society are disturbing and are thought to be very shocking. As Friedman states “the themes themselves are not new: evil cloaked in seeming good; prejudice and hypocrisy; loneliness and frustration; psychological studies of mind that have slipped the bond of reality” (44). “The Lottery” illustrates these themes of hypocrisy and blind obedience to ancient rituals that do not guarantee any prosperity yet they are still blindly followed. After the story was published Jackson…
On one occasion King George II's carriage horses bolted the only person to attempt to stop them was a small sooty figure of a man, a chimney sweep. It is considered extremely good luck, if on the journey to the Church you see a chimney sweep and even greater good luck if you saw the sweeps brush emerging out of the top of the chimney. So to this day to see a chimney sweep and receive the Kiss of Luck after the wedding ceremony is supposed to bring good fortune to the newly married couple.…
In “The Rocking-Horse Winner” written by D.H Lawrence Paul’s mother is a woman who is unsatisfied with her marriage. She seems to feel this way for her husband fails to make enough money to support the elegant lifestyle that she desires. Hester has put her own family in deep debt because she is so materialistic. She behaves as if she is a wonderful women but she does not fool her children. The children, a boy and two girls, know that their mother Hester does not love them nor anyone else. This statement we can declare its truth by the sentence in the short story that says the following: “There was a women who was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck. She…
This deterministic approach is too “hand off.” Reshler eventually identifies what luck is, and juxtaposes it to Fate and Fortune. “Luck is a matter of having something good or bad happens that lies outside the horizon of effective foreseeability.” Luck is something unpredictable. Rescher expounds on the conundrum of luck, asserting there are three necessary attributes for an event to correctly be assessed as luck. A beneficiary or maleficiary, a development that is positive or negative from the standpoint of the interest of the affected individual, and that it is fortuitous. This approach seems to claim a methodical game such as chess or even me writing this paper relies on luck. The latter example seems like a hyperbole, yet I am maleficairy in writing the paper, I would also rather be playing Dota 2 instead of writing this paper, I also had planned on writing this paper two nights ago. I’m truly unlucky that I have to write a…
To serve, as it does, to convince those with lack of motivation, or perhaps imagination, to remain stagnant with the hope that chance will smile upon them, the concept of luck is a farce. This is a truism that successful people understand. In fact, most successful people will state this truth almost as a proverb. For example, Oprah Winfrey has been quoted as saying, “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” Oprah Winfrey has the innate understanding that luck isn’t really luck at all. In fact, luck is the culmination of hard work.…

Life is not fair, it is determined by luck but also our actions can vary the odds. This is something that people may find throughout their life just because it was meant to be. And often there is nothing you can do about it. Is this really luck, or did people do this, and what can they do to change it? Many of us grow up with the constant reminder of the phrase, “Life is not fair.” In a world full of crimes and dangers, life cannot be fair. Human society is vicious, cruel and full of constant terrible acts that humans commit every day. Some people use the premise that life has its ups and downs, but it’s best to just keep going, even though the hard times, but is it true? In “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell, “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson shows how complicated it is to make condition equal to everyone and how unfair life can be in many ways in a world that is no equal.…
