Hotel Rwanda was a tragic true story about Paul Rusesabagina, a manager of a 4 star luxury hotel in Kigali, who attempts to save as many Tutsi people as he could by keeping them safe inside his hotel. In Rwanda, there was a tremendous amount of violence against the Tutsi minority in 1994. Paul, who was Hutu, was still extremely concerned because his wife, Tatiana, was Tutsi, which also made his children mixed. This made his wife and children a target along with the other Tutsi people. I found Paul Rusesabagina’s character inspiring because despite the genocide that was taking place all around his hotel, he still decided to take action. The UN organization does their best to create peace, but decides to evacuate when the attacks become much worse. Other government agencies began to send troops, but only to retrieve the “white people”. Paul states in the film, “All the white people are leaving us.” Also, while having a conversation with a dominant UN leader, Paul is told that other countries are abandoning them because they are African. Despite being abandoned, the fear of death, and low supply of resources, Paul Rusesabagina manages to pack the entire group of refugees intro multiple trucks, in order to get them across the line to safety at a refugee camp. The Tutsi Rebels also aided to keep the Hutus from attacking these trucks while passing. Without the help of Paul Rusesabagina’s bravery and benevolence, the Tutsi population in Rwanda could have possibly been wiped out entirely. Paul’s character in the movie was so inspirational, but after doing a little more research and realizing that he had also established The Hotel Rwanda Rusesabagina Foundation, which was created in order to prevent future genocides along with raising awareness is exceptionally moving.
