An education is the sum of all of the knowledge and skill that one obtains over time. Traditional classrooms fill students with key information that they transfer onto an answer sheet. An alternative style of teaching is to allow the students to formulate their own thoughts with minimal direction. Neither of these teaching methods provide students with an optimal education, but a mixture creates an ideal education by allowing students to analyze information in two complementary ways. Up until this point in my life, I have had a quality education because I have had the opportunity to experience this combination of learning styles as a student in both a traditional classroom and a discussion based learning environment.
My high school career began at a small school in New York that centered around the belief that a discussion based learning environment was essential for any subject. My teachers steered clear of throwing lackluster facts and information at the students. The flaw in this method was that key facts and information were overlooked to spare time for opinions. In contrast, a traditional classroom with a standardized test as the primary end goal allowed me to only obtain essential information but left no room for further thought. My education has been a good mixture of these two different learning styles because it has taught me to learn by being filled with facts, but also to think and analyze the information I am given. It is this combination that has led me to succeed in my college courses thus far and I will continue to apply it to my education in the
