PC Essay 1 Winter Palace Beautiful Old Age 2015 PREYA KAUR
In Larkin’s “The Winter Palace” and Lawrence’s “Beautiful Old Age” both personae express their interpretation of old age. Larkin’s persona appears to be experiencing old age and whilst expressing his sentiments towards his aging, he highlights the flaws in the reality of approaching death. In contrast to this, Lawrence’s persona seems appear to share hs expectation of what old age would evoke in his life. He perceives old age as wonderful, which is in stark variance with Larkin’s notion of selfdeprecation that comes from experiencing old age.

From the title, “The Winter Palace” , we can interpret that Larkin treats old age as a refuge as he disconnects from the world through it, causing his existence to become insular. It is also made obvious that persona is experiencing old age personally. “I give that all the cold shoulder”
Throughout the entire poem , “I” has been utilized , making the poem more personal. This causes the reader to feel as though he is taking a glimpse into the persona’s mind. In contrast to this, the persona in
“Beautiful Old Age” displays that his opinions are merely an expectation of old age. “It ought to be lovely to be old” the use of the word, “ought” shows the persona is simply envisioning old age to be wonderful. From the title, “Beautiful Old Age” it can be interpreted that persona is in fact looking forward to old age and sees it in a positive light. When comparing these two poems, it is realized that due to the juxtapositioning of “ Reality VS Expectations” , the poems vary largely on the opinions shared on old age.

Larkin utilizes structured rhymes in “The Winter Palace” to convey irony when comparing the form to the persona’s mind as the persona’s mind is

breaking down and hence is in a mess. The disintegration of the persona’s mind can be seen in the last couplet. “Then there will be nothing I know My mind will fold into itself, like fields, like snow”
This couplet is simple yet astoundingly poignant as it evokes a kind of mental shutdown which is somewhat tantamount to suicide hence implying that the persona has given up the battle against old age.
However,”Beautiful Old Age” goes at a slow and steady pace which brings out the calm and alleviate feelings of old people. These serene sentiments are once again displayed in the third stanza, “Soothing old people should be, like apples when one is tired of love”
Love can be seen as a struggle of material greed and constant need for more in life. ‘Tired of love” indicates that there is now no desire to struggle and hence peace can be attained. Larkin intentionally displays incongruence between the style and mental state of the persona whilst
Lawrence shows harmony between the style and the ideas of the persona. Comments: While you do understand the poems, you are not clear about the focus of your comparisons and are thus unable to sustain the comparative discussion. Please see me to learn how to organise your ideas properly.

Erik Erikson suggests that at this time it is important to find meaning and satisfaction in life rather than to become bitter and disillusioned. That is, to resolve the conflict of integrity versus despair. It has been estimated that by the year 2030, Americans over 65 will make up 20% of the population. Despite the problems associated with longevity, studies of people in their 70s have shown that growing old is not necessarily synonymous with substantial mental or physical deterioration. Many older people are happy and engaged in a variety of activities.…

I have always admired the senior citizens who are wondering how they have passed such long journeys of their lives. They not only have accomplished achievements, but also have done memorable works that deserve admiration, respect, and priority in today’s society. These old people may look incompetent and unexciting in somebody’s eyes and thoughts, but not everyone realizes that they are the people with greatest knowledge and experiences beyond their masters of life. From my own experience, whenever I see an old mister or mistress looking for help or in need of help, I can never ignore him or her and instead offer to help as much as I can. Originated from my respect upon them, I decided to interview an elderly gentleman about the observations and opinions on his experiences with ageism and ageist stereotypes. I interviewed this one particular person who wanted himself to be acknowledged as John Evans. We were so glad that he was more than willing to help us get through this assignment and really appreciate him for sparing his free time telling us his life story.…

"I shall grow old" age is a something that some people embrace and something that people feel haunts them."I shall die an old and decrepit romantic" In this poem it's seems that the Charles view on age is that his time is running out to find the love he so desperately desires. He appears to have a stern opinion that the type of love he seeks is for younger people. Just because of his age he feels he can not fight and or die for his love. He seems adamant to embrace the possibility that he could love in a different way. Simply by appreciating the company of his lover and dream of growing older together. Charles finds a way to connect love and age; however he does it in away that shows a disconnect between the two major ideas. He basically supports the idea that you can not be "star crossed lovers" at his age. Instead of meshing the two ideas together in such a way that states they can love and grow old together; a more positive connection between the two ideas.…
