LESSON FOCUS: Throwing and Catching
CONNECTION TO NATIONAL STANDARDS:
Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Standard 5 - The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
PSYCHOMOTOR: TLW perform throwing and catching correctly 90% of the time when observed at random.
COGNITIVE: TLW explain the appropriate skills for throwing and catching. They will also be able to identify the sports that involve throwing and catching.
AFFECTIVE: TLW cooperate with peers at all times when observed at random.
TEACHER OBJECTIVES (goals for improving my teaching): TTW provided positive feedback and teach the safety rules for proper throwing and catching.
EQUIPMENT USED/RESOURCES: Music, basketballs, bean bags, nerf balls, junior footballs, and other age-appropriate objects for throwing and catching.
SAFETY CONCERNS: Watch for hitting when tagging. Watch for students running into each other.
TEACHING STRATEGIES: Make sure students understand the directions and how to throw gently and provide a safe, fun environment.

Contact sports have been a part of school age children’s life for a long time in America. Whether it be football, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, or the recent addition to American sports, rugby. Doctors have been studying the statistics and have come to the conclusion that children have been developing physical injuries resulting from certain types of contact sports. Recently children have died from concussions, which they have received from playing contact sports. The future of contact sports will benefit greatly from these studies.
