Peace Corps Accomplishments
As my Peace Corps service comes to a close, I have realized that I want to continue in the service of others by assisting communities in conflict and post-conflict areas as an Army Civil Affairs Officer. This path resonates with my desire to serve my country and provide a valuable service as a global citizen. The U.S. Army provides that opportunity because of its organizational capacity, infrastructure, and access to areas where good work needs to be accomplished. All my key accomplishments can be traced to my Peace Corps service. With my counterpart Dera, I have organized and trained over 250 Malagasy rural farmers in business, nutrition, water sanitation, perma-gardening and small animal husbandry. As a result, we launched four businesses:

    As the Army transitions from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the organization is well served to take a long look in the mirror. After ten plus years of deployments, our combat tested warriors are sure to possess more than enough valuable knowledge to reinforce and improve upon our status as a profession. A TRADOC published paper explains “to be a professional is to understand, embrace, and competently practice the expertise of the profession.” I believe the profession of arms exists and there are many components that reinforce this argument. Among these components, initial entry training and institutional learning, shared values, and a monopoly on our mission are three of the most important tenants. All Soldiers must graduate from Basic Combat Training and all officers must graduate from a commissioning source. Similar to medical school or law school in other traditional professions, these schools set the foundation for years of practice that will lead to expert work. From the first day in these schools, Soldiers are taught the seven Army values and the Soldiers creed. Comparable to the Hippocratic Oath, these words set basic principles all Soldiers must live by. Last, no other organization has the knowledge, material, or will to ensure national defense and security.     I felt an automatic connection with Odette’s story as I will soon be serving in the Peace Corps within the African Continent, as Odette did in the early 90s. Odette served in Rwanda, until 1993, when the Peace Corps suspended its program within the country due to developing internal tension. Afterward, she took a few short-term jobs in Kenya, Gabon, and Burundi until in 1993 violent conflicts erupted in Burundi due to the death of the new Hutu president after years of Tutsi government. It was at this point that the Peace Corps decided to recommence their work in Rwanda. Prior to the operations implementation, the rhetoric on the radio had already turned antagonistic.
